P: New Printer. Photoshop consistently crashes when trying to print due to old printer information.

Had to get a new printer recently and I am now getting constant crashes when trying to print old PSD files (hundreds that I might need to print at any given time).

What I have done:

Removed all old printer drivers.

Ensured all current printer drivers are up to date.

Completly uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop (all old versions etc are nuked)

Updated to latest Photoshop (23.2.1)

This is what happens upon opening Photoshop for the first time after install:

Open Photoshop

Open existing PSD file.

Print.

Get warning that says "The saved printer information is an incompatible version. It has been set to default values"

Press OK.

Get second warning that says: "The saved printer information is an incompatible version is not compatible with this version of Photoshop, or the saved printer is no longer available. You will need to check your printer settings before printing."

Press OK.

Get to the Photoshop Print Settings Dialog and make the correct changes, print, save and be happy.

Now if I open another PSD from my old printer, Photshop will crash every single time.

Now I have to delete my preferences and then I can print one more file.  For what I pay for this software this beyond unacceptable.

I have deleted preferences.

I have held down the space bar when printing.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled all drivers and software.

What am I missing? I am fine with having to reset my printer information when printing an old file.

I am not fine with having to reset preferences EVERY SINGLE TIME to just print a file.

If holding down the spacebar while selecting print doesn't work, then to ensure that there is nothing at the file level causing the issue, you can select all layers in the layers panel and then use Layer > Duplicate Layers: New Document

This will essentially duplicate the document, but as you are duplicating layers no file-related info is being copied (unlike duplicating a document).

Then if the problem persists it's not the file, so look at using different printers, printer drivers or removing and reinstalling drivers etc to troubleshoot.

THANK YOU!!! I have been dealing with this ridiculous issue for YEARS with the only solution until now being to completely un/reinstall Photoshop, including deleting all my preferences, which was a huge pain every time due to having to change all my settings, workspace windows, and other options multiple times a year. It was such a huge waste of time, and as others dealing with this issue have mentioned elsewhere, completely unacceptable considering how much I pay for this program. Your solution fixed it! The first time in years I've been able to print an old file without having to lose everything on Photoshop. Thank you so much!

The universal fix for this is to hold the spacebar when you click "print".

This clears all old / invalid / corrupt print metadata in the file.

Yes! This worked for me -- Print default was to most recently used printer, an Epson. Followed instructions to open random image, set this one to Adobe PDF, selected Done. I was then able to open my PSD file, select Print -- and no crashing. Thank you!

Oh and also to say ! I found that which printer was the default also effects things ! I think its fair to say making none epson default printer helps

I have done extensive testing with this issue, which seems to me is associated only with Epson Printers.. Ive had 3 epsons and each time has caused this issue , which eleviates over time , as old psd's with previous epson info saved slowly get replaced with new and the issue clears up.. I did have to resave templates i use, with new printer info saved..
So opening an old psd which was printed with a previous epson no longer in use, will then crash on ctrl+p ..
WORKAROUND   -  if you open a brand new doc , do ctrl+p , select a none epson printer, and then press done .. Now open the troublesome psd again and ctrl+p you will find print settings oipen and you can print normally.
This relies on the fact you have other printers to be able to select as outlined above.. I choose a large format printer I have, (ipf6400) , and works everytime without fail .. This saves resetting preferences which is a pain in the a##... !
Any old PSD's you print regularly , you can use this process to be able to save new printer info and close , reopening should then allow you to print ..
Damn you Epson !

I don't have any plug-ins installed at the moment. I will get the crash reports in.

If you do have the Design to Print plug-in installed here are manual uninstall steps:

1. Close Adobe Photoshop, if running
2. Delete Extension
Go to /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions/ and delete ‘com.adobe.designtoPrint’ folder
Or
Go to /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions/ and delete ‘com.adobe.designtoPrint’ folder
3. Delete Plug-in and Generator folder
Go to /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CC 2022/Plug-ins/ and delete ‘Generator’ folder and AdobeDesigntoPrint.plugin
Perform same steps for other Adobe Photoshop CC versions.
4. Delete FBS folder
Go to /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Design to Print and delete ‘FBS’ folder

In another post here, the cause of the crash was an Adobe print plugin:

AdobeDesigntoPrint.plugin
adobe-designtoPrint-generator.js alias
adobe-designtoPrint-generator.js

Do check for that too.
