P: Photoshop CC 25.9 (non-beta) Error: 0xc0000142

Hi,

I've noticed that there has been an isssue reported with Photoshop CC 25.9 (beta) here about Photoshop failing to start with error 000142.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/photoshop-beta-v-25-9-cannot-be-start...

However, it looks like this is now occurring on the released version of 25.9.

Photoshop auto-updated itself today (was working fine before), and I  now get the same error 000142 when I try and start it. This is NOT a Photoshop beta version.

This is on Windows 10. CPU is a 14 year old Intel core i7.

I know it's old.... but it's been working fine with no issues 🙂

Is this no longer supported?

If that is the case, why did the auto-updater allow Photoshop to update?

Am I going to need to downgrade back to the previous version or is this issue going to be fixed?

Seems very strange that if Adobe knew of this issue that v25.9 would be released without fixing it.

If I do need to downgrade, how do I do that? I can't see a way to select a version to install.

Thank you for your help

Liz

A fix for this issue is in Public Beta version 25.10

A fix for General release will come soon.

Incorrect.

I have 25.9 on my Mac (unless it's the beta version, but it doesn't say as such, and I've never actively requested beta versions).

I have now downgraded from 25.9 on my PC to 25.7, and it is working correctly again.

On my Mac it even says "25.9.0 Release"  when you select "About Photoshop", no sign of "beta" anywhere!

and it makes no sense that I would have been updated to a beta version today in any case. Photoshop is used nearly every day.

and here's an image from the Adobe Create Cloud app on the PC.

Again, no indication that 25.9 is a beta version.

I've no idea where you found that. There is no 25.9 production version. The current release is 25.7.

25.9 is the beta.

So how do you explain what I'm seeing?

As you can see in my image above,  the latest version is 25.9

Both my Mac and PC got updated to 25.9.

My guess is an Adobe mistake... possibly 25.9 somehow got released in a specific region only  or something.

I have nothing else to offer 🙂

I was prompted to update to the 25.9 release this morning (UK time) and did so.  It is not a beta version - see screenshot.  However I could find nothing on the Adobe website about it when I went searching for details of the new Adjustment Brush tool.  Looks like this was released in error and then quickly withdrawn.

The current production version is 25.7. So you're seeing this in the beta 25.9, and it has been acknowledged as a bug in the 25.9 beta. So a fix is coming.

This is not a problem in the production version 25.7.

Ah, OK, that would explain it. I haven't seen any traces of a 25.9 here.

Thanks @NRC13

Finally, I don't feel like a complete idiot...
I am also in the UK... maybe I'm not far off with my region idea.

Not sure it's been withdrawn though... for me it's still listed as available to install in the creative cloud app, and still listed as the latest version

Liz, can you do me a favor and see if the issue is resolved on your system with the latest Photoshop Desktop Beta (v25.10)? That'll help us better understand what's going on. Thanks.

Hi @MissLiz ,

Sorry about Photoshop shutting down with this error and really appreciate you reporting this to the forums to us. Curious if there are some remnants in the Preferences that might be causing this with the new install.

Can you try resetting your Photoshop preferences?

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually
If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Pete

You're definitely correct @MissLiz, We tend to do a phased roll out for our releases for exactly this purpose and not everybody gets it right away. This helps us find out if there are any issues we weren't aware of, and really appreciate your report.

Check Adam's message below and try the latest beta as well when you can to see if it's still happening on your system with that beta and let us know!

Thank you!

@Gna03011954 it's a known issue with version 25.9, seems to be related to older CPU's, you can revert back to version 25.7 until Adobe provide a fix

05-2024 Instalé la Beta de Photoshop y se produce este error, hoy salió la nueva versión de Photoshop y también se produce el mismo error.

El procesador cumple con los requisitos.

¿Cómo se soluciona?

Gracias

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Peter,

We confirmed we fixed one issue related to this (I was seeing the same error on my 13-yr old Windows 10 system, but now can launch without error), but there must be something else about your configuration. Can you please do me a favor and share your Help > System Info from Photoshop?

Thanks,

Adam
