P: PS 25-27 Could not complete the Camera Raw Filter command because of a program error.

Community Beginner ,

Sorry to bring this up again, previous thread is locked. The bug that has run throughout all of version v26 of photoshop is still here on my machine on v27.

After opening a couple of raw files the 'Could not open 'file name' because of a program error' dialog is displayed until Photoshop is shut down. PS can be used okay without opening raw files, but it's fairly critical to my workflow so I'm still stuck on v25.9.

Has anyone actually found a fix for this other than building a new computer! I've tried uninstalling and cleaning all PS software and raw, uninstalling and reinstalling graphics card and drivers (radeon 6650xt on both adrenalin and pro drivers) win 10, i9700k 32gb ram.

Thanks in advance!

I saw this occasionally in v25.11 - v26.x, but so far haven't seen it in v27. But it's only been a day.

I've posted a bit about this previously, but was disappointed in the lack of traction it got - even though it affected a lot of users.

There is a workaround if you use Bridge: keep a raw file easily accessed in Bridge, and "Open in Camera Raw" from the right-click menu. This opens ACR hosted by Bridge, not hosted by Photoshop, and this is not affected. Once opened this way, that kickstarts it back in operation, and it will work normally in Photoshop after that. Until it breaks again.

Another workaround is to record actions. Basic functionality works - the problem is that the UI/dialog does not come up.

This is a Photoshop bug, not an ACR bug, and it affects a few other modules and filters as well. It's a tricky one, because it's apparently a "time-bomb" - some event triggers it, and then it fails at some unpredictable point in the future.

Yes, it's painful, I've been using PS for 25 years and build my own machines, this is the first bug I just can't shake!

Interesting I remember the post about the action trick before, but that didn't work for me, one of my main work flow actions uses the raw filter on a smart object layer and that also triggers it! I'll try the bridge method again today to see if that works.

...and there it was. Took almost a full workday before it came up - and I've been checking regularly today:

ACR_error.png

And that's why it's so difficult to get recognition for this as a bona fide bug. Most people probably don't work in Photoshop for 4-8 hours straight, but that's often how long it takes before it shows up. And how do you fix a bug that takes 8 hours to show up? How do you know what actually triggers it?

Moderators - move this thread from "Discussions" to "Bugs".

Hey, @D Fosse. I'll move this thread to the Bugs section soon and have the team look at it. This issue has existed for a while, and you've summarized why it's hard to pin down. Also, the specific message is broadly used.

I'll request you to provide the ACR Logs and PS Logs:

C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw

C:\Users\<Username>AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2026

Thanks!

@Sameer K

Thank you. These are from today. Let me know if they're not the right ones.

I've attached mine as well, as the error is very easily repeatable.

Having the same issue as others, but working on a large panorama. Thought it was an issue with the pano size, but am thinking now it is this bug. Happening with the same image in LRC as well, getting errors on it no matter what I do. I'd share my logs, but there is no attachment option to do so.

Hey, @Jake Norton. Thanks for the comment. In the above conversation, Lightroom Classic isn't part of the unexpected behavior. Could you record your workflow as a video? It could be a slightly separate issue.

Thanks!

LATEST

@Sameer K  is correct. Lightroom Classic has never been affected by this.

Here are the key bullet points:

  • It started in Photoshop version 25.11. Version 25.9 and earlier does not have this problem.
  • It can take a long time before failure, and it's unpredictable. I've had entire workdays with no problems, and then the next day it can fail after 5 minutes.
  • It only happens with Camea Raw hosted by Photoshop. Camera Raw hosted by Bridge is unaffected.
  • At the same time as ACR stops responding, some of the other modular filters do too (e.g. Liquify).
  • The Camera Raw Filter still works correctly in actions (where the UI doesn't come up), even if the main interface throws this error.
