Which version? Can you post a screenshot of the version for reference? As a 20+ year pro user, it’s sad to watch Adobe fall so far.

Yes I went to the oldest 22.0.0

@Treehouse Customs LLC I can confirm two things. First rolling back to version 22.0 won't solve this issue, still makes a copy file and doesn't overwrite the jpg file. Maybe you tried with a flattened file.

Second, the latest version 22.1, same problem different version...groundhog photoshop FF...day

Just updated from 2017 to 2021 and discovered this completely insane bug. When is this going to be fixed??

So I ran the latest update and found that opening any file would crash the app after about 10 seconds. I know this isn't exactly on topic, but it's yet another example of how things are not going well with Photoshop. I had a Time Machine back up to the previous version so I didn't have to rely on the CC app to roll back to the previous version. As for the Save As and replace issue, naming the file Any_File_Name copy.jpg will overwrite any further saves as intended. While having a set of files with "copy" in the name isn't the best option, but it does solve the overwrite problem. As workarounds go, it's not all that bad.

@brad_dismukes The workaround is an option (as suggested previously in this thread), though relying on bug workarounds for an incredibly long time on a pricey subscription based service, is less than ideal and should be resolved rather than brushed off.

Also, and not to be dismissive, but the issue Photoshop crashing 10-seconds after opening a file could be an issue with your work station. This isn't an issue for me on my newer iMac (2019) or my older workstation (2013). I feel this would be a bigger gripe than not overwriting project files if it was common. Hope you're able to resolve (fresh OS install, perhaps? Perhaps run Disk Utilities first to see if anything is flagged.) Cheers.

I'm now on CC2021 but I'm coming from CS6, which allowed me to "save as" and overwrite a .jpeg file without creating a new .jpeg with "copy" in the name.

Anyway, I would like for this to be fixed but for the meantime I found a pretty good work-around.

Instead of doing "save as" (like how we're all used to), you'll need to do "export as". I use the default command+shift+S for "save as" and I made a keyboard shortcut command+option+S for "export as". It takes a second for this window to pop up for my computer but from here I can create a .jpeg / .png / .gif / .svg file and overwrite the previous file with the same name and file type.

*gioxcas "export as" is fine for web, but not print (working with TIF files), where the "_copy" bug really pooches you when you need to make a last minute change to a photo(s) and the job gets run with the original file (instead of the updated one). Makes for a pricey bug (and an upset boss or client).

Something I've gotten used to doing since I have the luxury of  3 monitors is...

I Started saving Jpgs I'm working on to 1 file...
If a revision is made, then I toss the previous jpg.

Not a fix... and not happy... but it works.

Maybe Adobe should pay for such losses! Luckily it's not happened to me yet but I have sent versions to clients where they say 'you haven't made the amend!?' when you have, it's just sat in the same folder as 'copy'. very annoying and embarrassing. I now use the 'export as' method, but it's not ideal and slower. This thread shows Adobe really don't care about this. Saving over something is just fundamental in any software?!

This thread is going on for ages and Adobe simply don't care at all...
Every day I have to make work arounds which cost me extra time and money. And still they collect my money for the software... every month...
Let's send Adobe an invoice of lost time due to this annoying bug....

With DefaultFolder (CMD+ I) I can get rid of the 'copy' text with in the dialog window... and move the first original file to the trash (CMD + T).

We're STILL discussing this?

Come on. Give it a rest, and get rid of Adobe "Creative Cloud." It's done.

Photoshop Family,

I talked to the Adobe Photoshop team and (after an interesting call when they told me that this behavior is normal: "you can only save a jpg from another jpg in Photoshop"... no comment) they have said to me that they know about this bug and they are working on it, so let's hope they fix it in a soon update.

cheers

That doesn't make sense. If they say it's "normal," then they don't regard it as a bug. So what are they working on?

Adobe regards a lot of broken, unprofessional junk as "correct."

In a first conversation in which they connected remotely to my computer to see it in live, the guy told me this normal-behavior thing as a typical answer of a help desk person not very trained, the day after they called me and told me that the bug is known by the developer team and they are working on it. Does it make sense now?

Adobe, what's going on here?  Why is there such a delay on fixing this issue? I've used Photoshop for almost 20 years and have become so frustrated by this for the past year now.  It makes my file saving process tedious and very time consuming (having to delete the old file in order to save without "copy").  Flattening is not an option with many of us. Some of us are REGULARLY updating/editing saved files and could really use this fix.  With the amount of complaints I can't believe Adobe hasn't taken care of their customers requests for this fix by now.

That was a pretty big omission from the original story, so yes.

What I find interesting is that THIS issue has garnered so much outrage while other longstanding defects do not.

For example, the one where if you select a different layer, do something, and then press Undo... it undoes your action AND re-selects the previous layer. For example, if you switched from a text layer to a bitmap layer and made a brushstroke, undoing it will not only remove the brushstroke but re-select the text layer... so now you can't make a new brushstroke.

@oscargoldman - absolutely!

Adobe Illustrator is doing the same.

This is a programmer-prone hell they are creating - gone are the days of real world user development strategies.

I have a list of bugs a mile long for InDesign, Illustrator *and* PhotoShop. But why should I teach Adobe to fix their messes - I'm not being paid. In fact, I am paying a premium to use their products and still not getting the quality that is required. Every time I got back to a feature I haven't used in a while - recently the Perspective grid in Illustrator and Indexing in InDesign - I find it full of issues that would not exist had Adobe actually developed it thoroughly and used real people to provide feedback. They are simply using developers to patch it and throw updates at us every few weeks thinking they're doing something to improve their apps when clearly they are not.

Over a year now with no resolution to the JPG copy issue - that is beyond comprehension. There is no workaround to this - it requires a concerted effort on Adobe's part - but they are not willing to acknowledge nor fix it. And their support staff continue to call it "normal action" and "a feature."?!?!

Anyone know a good lawyer who would be interested in starting a class action suit? Not for the feint of heart tho - Adobe is likely really lawyered up.

Illustrator is abandonware. Adobe should open-source it and be done with it.

I've long since moved on to Affinity Designer and Sketch, both of which have some pretty profound flaws but at least they're being maintained.... and you don't have to rent them.

Really user hell. When basic functions are either removed or altered without the User in mind, convoluted processes arise without any sense of whether it's a bug or a change in function. Speaking to 1st level Adobe support is simply a waste of time: 1) they are prone to give the wrong information; 2) they don't seem to understand the nature of a problem. I'm not sure if Adobe monitors board activity here. If they don't, then these types of threads are meaningless. If they do, then a rep ought to be posting here about what needs to happen to fix the problem. This is not rocket science, just a logical way to keep everyone in the loop. 🙄

I'm going to say it again...
Organized, Hourly, Twitter Spamming until this is addressed.
I don't understand why Adobe feels the need to turn Photoshop into
Snapchat filter heaven... Nice Parlor tricks, but how about a stripped down version minus the BS
