working on Catalina OS. saving file extension works now but does not save over jpg when saving it creates a copy which is annoying and time consuming to fix
updated to the 22.4.1 it is sad that this has not been fixed on 10.15.6 Mac OS Catalina. the only suggestions I have after reading posts here are to change the key command for the "new feature" save as (can you tell my eyes are rolling) to the key command (command-shift-s) which we are all used to and when in the new window you can either manually take the word (copy) out or another reader suggested to use the option key to select the file to delete it before saving or lastly the easiest select the file and this will change the name which you can then overwrite. Adobe messed this up they know it they said it in chat messages to us when discussing it they (adobe) try to blame apple try to blame everyone but their own software.
Now, while this is all f_cking bull sh!t and needs to be fixed forever ago, I'm going to repost my fastest workaround. When saving as, left click the file name, right click the file name, move to trash, save. You will need to select the file type, i.e. jpg, png, etc. I do hope this helps because this forum is long as f_ck, and I certainly wouldn't go through all 18 pages at this point (unlike a certain user who thinks people have that kind of time)... Here's a pic for reference:
I don't think "They" comprehend that having to delete the word "Copy" 100 times a day is basically the equivalent of picking at a Scab. Every time it is done, the user is just more and more aggravated.
I am fortunate to have 3 monitors, one of which has all my work folders open. I've learned (Been conditioned) to keep a "Holding Bin" folder that I save all my jpgs to, since this began. I typically go delete from that window before saving a jpg. I had not thought about the Right click in the save window. Thanks!
I've been doing this and it can be nerve-wracking when the file names are so similar. We save to a server and when it "moves to the trash" it will just be completely gone, unlike a local drive. NO room for error. My coworker found in Photoshop documentation that Adobe Photoshop does NOT support saving files on MacOS to a server.
I can't stand the split purpose of "save as" and "save as a copy". What a huge disservice this is to Adobe's VERY large user base.
Absolute pain in the ass, I agree 100%. My suggestion would be, and I know this is a simple one, use the workaround I gave, it seems to be the most efficient way to keep a fast work-flow, and wait for Adobe to fix their bull sh!t. Though your situation in particular is definitely on the more scary side. Use extreme caution in your case, best of luck.
Thus far, I have only complained to myself about some of the changes made to Photoshop, but I'm really frustrated today, so I'm now complaining out loud. The 'Save' and 'SaveAs' processes are mindbending and time-consuming. Why were these processes changed? I want to 'SaveAs' to whichever file type I choose. I don't want to be limited to three file types. I don't want to 'Save a Copy' every time I make changes to a file or when creating and saving a new file. Also, why can't I just 'Save' the changes I made to an already existing file if it's the same file type? This was all working just fine.
Adobe, I implore you to quit making nonsense little changes with every update. We pay a lot for Adobe products. Please stop making it more difficult to be happy using them.
Update 22.4.2: FINALLY after more than year of complaints is legacy Save As without adding COPY to filename back! Of course, you have to enable legacy Save As in Preferences, because otherwise it would seem like they are uncompetent in Adobe - so now they pretend their intention was good, only stupid users are not able to understand them... Similar to cause with constrained transform with/without SHIFT key pressed.
I can confirm that for me it is working, tested on a layered psd file and converted it into a jpg. One annoying thing though is that now I need to select the save a copy option every time, it doesn't appear by defect. Finally this is solved!!
In what universe does it make any sense from a UI or UX (and common sense) perspective to have "Save", "Save As", "Save a Copy", Save for Web", "Export As", "Export For" options? This boggles my mind.
Adobe should consider drug testing for it's engineering, design, and management departments. Mind blowing. This has to be a very bad, long-running joke.
@Sendy Fiala Update isn't available to me yet. Looking forward to checking it out!
To touch on your other comment, I personally prefer constrain transform without holding shift and unconstrained while holding as default, as I use the former 99% of the time. Though either way, it's just something that takes getting used to, depending on the preference.
Oh... wow... I absolutely love the warning message with the Legacy Save option...
AdboeStupidSpeak:
"When reverting to legacy “Save As”, the word “copy” will no longer be appended to your filename when saving a copy. Enabling this option might cause accidental document overwriting and loss of work due to identical file names."
Um, yeah, because we all know how to use PhotoShop. Clearly the programmers do not have the slightest freaking clue how this app has worked, since 1990.
This is like the translation my friend loves to quote "Please put the item that is less round into the slot that is less square."
FINALLY A TWO YEARS LATER WE FINALLY GET THE ONE CLICK FIX.
Preferences in the new updated photoshop 22.4.2 has finally given us the ability to (Enable Legacy "Save As") which will write over the existing jpeg png psd file instead of being forced to have the word (copy) added to file names with a second file being created. running Big Sur 11.4 and adobe photoshop 22.4.2
Yeah, like we users could navigate and learn how to use a bloated program like Photoshop but somehow we can't figure out how to save files without error.
I suppose you think that anyone who is able to use Photoshop would never be dumb enough to accidentally save an image in a way that wipes out something previously saved.
Then Adobe should be consistent. I use PS on both Mac and Windows. Well, I used to. I've stopped using it on Mac because Windows PS doesn't do this. In fact this problem was one of the main reasons I switched to Windows.
