P: Unable to "Apply Gradient" or "Create Gradient Preset" from Libraries panel

Hi,

whenever I try to use one of the gradients I've created using Adobe Color, I get the ominous "Could not complete your request because of a program error." message. This happens both with "Apply Gradient" and "Create Gradient Preset" in the Libraries panel.

I've encountered this bug both in current Photoshop Beta (Adobe Photoshop Version: 24.5.0 20230412.m.2137 91413a4 arm64) and Photoshop 2023 (Adobe Photoshop Version: 24.4.1 20230418.r.449 53a6c60 arm64).

Running macOS Ventura 13.2.1 (22D68). Photoshop User Diagnostic Plugin output is attached for both beta and current Photoshop, also system information from beta.

Created a handful of gradients and palettes with Adobe's Color online tools. Saved them to my library in folders and have tried PS 25.0.0, PS 24, and PS 22 in attempts to use any of the colors or add them to my panels.

I followed multiple tutorials online but it doesn't seem like anyone else had the same issues I'm having.

I've tried double clicking, unlocked layers, right clicking and trying all the options. Changed doc color settings, restarted, restarted the program(s). No luck yet. It would be a great tool if I could figure out a way to implement any of it.

Thanks for reporting this. Updating status.
With the latest release of Photoshop (v25.0), Preset Sync has been discontinued, and the feature will no longer be functional.

so how are we supposed to save and use the extract gradient function on adobe color? or will that be removed, now that its useless?

I'm using the 2025 version on Windows 10 and experiencing the same issue. If the preset sync feature has been discontinued, then why is the Extract Gradient tool still available on the color.adobe.com website? It doesn't make any sense.

I’m using the latest version of Photoshop and extracted colors using Adobe Color, saving them to a Creative Cloud Library. The swatches (both solid colors and gradients) appear correctly in the Libraries panel inside Photoshop.

However, when I try to apply one of these colors to an object or layer, I get the following error:

“Could not complete the command due to a program error.”

Strangely, if I right-click on the color or gradient and select “Get Info”, the error goes away and I’m able to apply the color normally. It seems that this action forces the program to reload or revalidate the color data, which temporarily fixes the issue.

I’ve already restarted Photoshop and Creative Cloud, but the problem returns unless I repeat this manual step each time.

Expected behavior:

Colors in the Library should apply to selected layers without needing a manual refresh.

Please investigate this bug, as it slows down the workflow and seems to be related to Library syncing or metadata loading.

Hi @Sulammita Lovo! Thank you for reaching out! I'm sorry you're running into this issue. I couldn't reproduce it on my Windows machine.

Please share more details so that we can dig deeper. Please copy and paste your system configuration from Help> System Info> Copy and paste it into a text file and attach it to your response. Since when did you start noticing this issue? Maybe after an update to the application, the OS, or a hardware change in the setup.

While we wait, you can try out these fixes and see if they change anything.

1) As a test, turn off the GPU: From Edit> Preferences> Performance, uncheck "Use Graphics Processor". If it works, leave it as such and update your GPU drivers if you haven't already, then turn it back on. Studio drivers are preferred over Game-ready ones.

2) Check GPU Settings:

• In the same window as step 1, Uncheck Multithreaded Compositing.
• Go to Preferences > Technology Previews
• Enable Use Older GPU Mode (2016)

3) Disable the Generator Plugin: Go to Edit > Preferences> Plugins, and uncheck Enable Generator.

4) Reset Preferences: Corrupted preferences can cause unexpected behavior. I suggest you back them up first. For Steps and more information, please refer to this HelpX article: Preferences in Photoshop

I had been having trouble with this as well.  I found if I right-clicked on the gradient in the library and selected "Get Info" it will open a larger view and you can examine the composition of the gradient, but more importantly, go to the 3 dots above and from there you can "Create Gradient Preset", save it to your regular presets.  I do a lot of color mapping and it seems to work OK after that.  Good luck!
