Photoshop 2024 Keeps momentarily Freezing my Windows 10 Computer

Whenever I open Photoshop on my Dell XPS 15 9520 the computer keeps hanging for 5 or so seconds then works again. This happens every 30 seconds or so. The computer is unusable whenever photoshop is running, wether in foreground or if minimized. The computer is fine when Photoshop is not running. I tried all the recommended things like disabling GPU, clearing cache, disabling plug ins and deactivating native canvas. This is very frustrating as I am unable to use Photoshop at all.  

I updated to the latest Photoshop 25.3.1 and problem still occurs. I have made sure the XPS 15 is fully up to date including drivers as well. There is ample memory and over 1 TB of disc space free. Is anyone else experiencing this? What can I do. Any guidance appreciated.

Also disable the integrated Intel GPU, just because dual GPUs is always a potential conflict, and something you should always do with laptops.

Photoshop uses the GPU for actual data processing. You can't send data to one and get it back from the other, so there can only be one GPU in that equation.

I failed to mention that this problem only started occuring a week ago, I have not had any issues with Photoshop on this laptop prior. I cannot think of anything that has changed on the laptop in that time.  I will try a restore point though and see if that resolves the issue

Thanks for the pointers, here is an update:

* I checked and I do not have any presets defined, so nothing to reset

* It is not possible to disable the internal GPU on the XPS-15 architecture as far as I know, as the external GPU uses the internal GPU as the pipeline from what I remember. I have been running Photoshop with the GPU enabled in Photoshop for several years without issue until now.

* I checked for restore points, but I only have one for a date after the problem started occuring unfortuntely

* The computer freezing happens when Photoshop  is in background or foreground. You can open Photoshop, and even if you have not opended a file, the freezing starts to occur, no matter what app on the computer you try to use. As soon as you shut down Photoshop, all is good on the laptop.

Thanks again for the feedback. I think I have narrowed this down...when I removed a Windows security update from 12th Jan, all is now working as it should. There appears to be some incompatibility between the Adobe Software and this update. What do I do now? Report to Windows or Adobe?

No issues here with Win updates and PS. I am using dual monitors. When I encounter a percieved sluggishness I open Performance monitor on the other screen. This helps in narrowing the concern. 

May want to post Sys Info for assistance. "Help/System Info"

I have been unable to resolve this issue. Whenever I have Photoshop or Lightroom Classic open, the computer keeps freezing for a few seconds every 20-30 secs. I have all latest Dell and Windows updates, and have latest Ps and LrC versions running. The problem started occuring around 2 weeks ago. Correction from original post, this is a Dell XPS 15 9510 machine with i9 processor, 32GB RAM and over 1 TB of free drive space. I have now checked the following

* Manually reset photoshop preferences - no change

* Disabled GPU - no change

* I removed any windows updates made around time issue started to occur with no effect so re-installed

* Cleared cache, disabled plug ins and deactivated native canvas - no change

Need help as I am unable to use these Adobe applications, which I need to run my photography business

The computer is fine when Ps or LrC are not running, but becomes unusable when they are running, whether or not they are in the foreground or background.

Not sure what manually reset PS means. Are you are saying PS has been changed to default setttings?

Diagnosing intermittent glitches can be time consuming and difficult process.

Preferences - Performance - 70%

Preferences - File Handling 10 Minutes

You can try as suggested earlier to monitor the performance meterics in Windows. There should be some activity when this freezes. You can review the metrics before and after to see if anything unusual is occuring.

Thanks for the ideas. Yes I reset the preferences to get Ps in its default state. During a freeze, CPU activity for all processes is 0%, the whole computer freezes.

Should have stated if you look at the attached file in previous response.

In the lower part of the image you will see next to Task Group: Hanging Events

The Hang is where the app stops and normally shuts down completly.

Since you state it Freezes you want to look for this in the Task Group

Really not difficult to read the logs. However as stated may want to take a look at Event ID online

Not sure if Adobe Tech support still provides log support. They may be able to remote in and fix.

Have you tried looking at Event Viewer in Windows?

In Search window next to Start button enter "Event" this should open a dialog box for Event Viewer

When Event Viewer opens you should see a snap shot of your system.

Place your cursor over the top item in the left window pane. "Event Viewer Local"

Look to the Center window under Summary of Administrative Events

This will show any Errors or Warnings

You can post your findings and we can go from there. Event Viewer has a lot of information regarding your computer and is part of Windows.

Thanks for the suggestion re setting GPU performance for photoshop and sniffer. I followed the settings in the tips, but this made no difference unfortunately.

Thanks for the suggestion to look at the Windows Event viewer.  I do not really know what I am looking for, but did notice a lot of errors with Event ID 131.

When you have an Error you can search on the Event ID.

I don't believe this is your problem though.

In the left window select Windows Log\Applications

Right Window pane select Find. In the dialog box enter a search for the app which hangs. ie Photoshop or whichever app. Once you locate the app double click the line. In the bottom window should be another clue as to why. May not be as descriptive though. Just send it over and we will try to follow it through.

Hi, and thanks again for the feedback. I did as you suggested, I looked at the Application logs, and none were generated after I opened Photoshop and the computer froze. However, no system logs were generated either.  The only logs I see around the time of the computer freezing are the Windows security audit logs which state - "Audit Success". These occur every few seconds.......I am still at a loss.

Will help you pursue this later today. Have some business to take care of first. In the interim run Windows Reliability Monitor to see if this will show you errors. When I have had Illustrator Stop errors in the past they show in Windows/Applications Logs. As I recall you are running a laptop? As I mentioned in previous post I am not a fan of running recent releases of PS. I am still on an older version of PS on my laptop which has an the Intel 11th i5-11400H @ 2.70GHz, 2688 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s). Yes, couple years old. Bought it to tether and work on images on the road.

While taking some screen shots of my backup system today I noticed there are some errors. Some of these was caused by disabling some services intentionally while testing. There is a Stop Error on 16 Feb. IOT to find the cause liik below the timeline, Shows AcrobatNotification Stopped working. Provides the path where the file is located. In order to deep dive the concern double click the path here. This provides additional information on the Error. 

To get to the Reliability Monitor you access through Control Panel/Security and Maintenance/Maintenance/ 

Click on View Reliability History

You should see the screens from there.

Caveat; Caution here if you get a screen which asks you if you want to activate. You want to insure the certificate is authenic and signed by a reputable software developer. I run additional MS software app to verify this.

I looked at the Reliability History, and that shows nothing unfortuntely. On recovery, I looked at that first, but I did not have a restore point for the time before the problem started occuring for some reason

It may be possibly the pointer devices freezing, not the whole computer, as I can still navigate outlook with the up and down arrows when the pointer freezes. This only happens when I run Adobe LrC, Bridge or Ps, and the track pad or mouse will not move the pointer.  I am going to look into this some more
