Photoshop Error Opening DNG file from NAS using Samba (SMB)

Mac OS version 12.1

 - 2021 Macbook Pro 10 core M1 MAX

 - 2020 iMac Retina 5K 10 core i9

TrueNAS version 12.0 U7

Synology version DSM 6.2.4-25556 update 3

 

ISSUE: Opening certain DNG files in Photoshop consistently returns with error "Could not open [filename] because of disk error." This does not happen with all DNG files but several of them. The same issue occurs with After Effects trying to import the DNG file as well. The common inteface between both PS and AE is of course Adobe Camera RAW and this is where the problem may actually be. 

 

When the file is opened via AFP or put onto a local volume, the file can be opened by Photoshop with no issue. The same file can be opened by Lightroom, Preview (OSX app) over SMB from the NAS. Meanwhile Photoshop can access the NAS share using SMB and open other files including some other DNG files without issue. This issue does not occur with Windows machines. 

 

This issue has been reported before. It appears to be intermittent as is the case with me. It has been reported by others. It would be nice if this was fixed.

For the certain files that have trouble, can you open Terminal, then drag and drop the file in there, then copy/paste the entire path and file name from the dialog?

Could you try opening other raw file types (non-DNG) from the NAS and check if they can be opened successfully?  In particular, try opening a file in ACR, making a edit (any edit, like Exposure adjustment), then clicking Open.  Check if the file opens properly in Ps and has the correct edit applied.  You should also end up with a sidecar XMP file on the NAS, if things are working properly.

This info (whether the non-DNG raw case works) might help us identify more precisely what the underlying issue is.
