Photoshop no longer auto-loads newly installed fonts

Standard behavior (consistent for many years): Photoshop is open and running; I install a new font using Font Book on macOS; that font is instantly available in Photoshop.

The same was also true for fonts added using Adobe Fonts.

New behavior (as of recent app revision): Photoshop is open and running; I install a new font using Font Book; the font is not available in Photoshop until I close and open the app again.

Adobe Fonts do sometimes become available in the running app, but it takes a long time -- on the order of 15-30 minutes.

This is using Photoshop 27 on macOS Sequoia (not Tahoe).

I don't understand why an Adobe Employee or someone doesn't help us with our problem, there obviously is a problem!

I also noticed this issue (Windows OS). Newly installed fonts (that are not under Adobe Fonts) while Photoshop 27.2 is open get loaded into Photoshop (a loading cursor appears), then after a few seconds, I can use them without doing anything else.

Nowadays, I have to restart Photoshop just to be able to use it. 😕😕

Illustrator 30.1 has no issue and auto-loads newly installed fonts just fine.

1. Open Photoshop file

2. Create text, set to Font A (currently available in Photoshop)

3. Go to Finder; open Font B (an OTF file) with Font Book, add to system

4. Return to Photoshop; select text & go to font list; Font B is not available

There doesn't seem to be anything else special about it -- sorry not to be more helpful! This is on Sequoia 15.7.2, a current-generation M4 Macbook Air.

Hi All, Can you please list the steps to reproduce and font management application you used? As far as I tried with Ps 27.0 and 27.1 on Mac (Sequoia), using Font Book to activate and deactivate fonts worked fine without restarting Photoshop.

I’m having the same issue. It started after I installed Photoshop Beta version 27, and none of the usual fixes work. This seems to be a new type of bug. Please look into it—it’s not just the two of us. I’ve already commented on a few posts on Reddit, and other people are experiencing the same problem.

P.S. I can confirm that a downgrade to 26.3 fixes this issue. (I don't know about intervening versions—I just tried 26.3 as an experiment.)

The core issue is fonts installed outside of Adobe Fonts, using macOS Font Book. Previously, these were available instantly in Photoshop. Something about a new version has caused a regression, so that a restart is required.

@Robin Sloan

How about using "More fonts" tab in the font menu? It lists all the fonts from Adobe Fonts. The font selected should be available to use immediately.

This is a brand-new issue, unrelated to any previous font glitches. You can find other reports of it online, e.g. here on Reddit:

Hi @sloanyo, welcome to the Photoshop Community Forums! Here's an article on how to troubleshoot font issues: https://adobe.ly/4pKcNWr. Please let me know when you've tried these steps and if you're still experiencing the issue. Thanks! ^CH
