Smart object gray layer at top of file causes blocks when working

When working on files with a grain layer (gray layer with noise and g.blur smart filters) at the top of the file I often get gray blocks when I try doing any sort of pixel based adjustments--paint, clone, heal etc--below. This has been going on for years.

@defaultverjr85fjunl

Could you please let me know which version of Photoshop and Operating System you're currently using? If it's not too much trouble, would you mind sharing a screen recording of the issue? It would really help us understand what's going on.

I cannot attach a screen recording. There is no option to add.

Thanks @CMass. I have been trying to output a video file of the issue with proprietary details obscured, but the render is taking too long. Hopefully the attached screenshot sums it up well. The gray blocks appear wherever the tools are used to manipulate pixels.Screenshot 2024-08-14 at 9.52.27 AM.png
