P: Photoshop 26.11 freeze at launch on Reading Brushes & Building Color Conversion Tables

Just installed version 26.11 on Windows 10 and Photoshop is freezing on reading brushes, have already tried manually resetting the preferences, uninstalling version 26.11 and deleting the Adobe Photoshop 2025 folder from the appdata folder, reinstall version 26.11 same issue.

Reverted back to version 26.10, and it's working fine.

I just installed 26.11, and "reading brushes" flashes past in 1/4 second. Everything OK.

You're sure you don't have any non-default brushes left behind in a folder somewhere, that wasn't removed in the reset?

@D Fosse the only non default brushes were the legacy ones, I'll uninstall 26.10, remove them and reinstall 26.11 to see what happens

Edit, after doing the above it opens OK until I close and open it again a few times, then starts freezing again on reading brushes

Update, used the Adobe cleaner tool, removed all Adobe related stuff as well, reinstalled 26.11 and still same issue, sometimes it opens OK, and sometimes it freezes reading brushes 😒

This is on my work PC, will try installing on my home PC later to see what happens

Windows 11 Pro / Mem : 32GB / Core i7 / Nvivia RTX4050 でver.26.1.0から26.1.1にアップしたら「ブラシを読み込み中」で起動が止まってしまいます。

Shiftキーを押しながら起動すると「サードパーティのプラグインを読み込まないで起動」となって普通に起動できます。

特にサードパーティのプラグインは何も入れていません。

Photoshopはほぼデフォルト状態です。

なにか原因分かりませんか？バグですか？

Hi @Ged_Traynor! Thank you for reporting this. Good to know that the application is working after the reinstallation.

This doesn't seem to be an issue on my Windows machine. In case this happens again, try deleting the Brushes.psp file from C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2025\Adobe Photoshop 2025 Settings. Before you do that, make sure you copy the file to safe location first, so that you have a backup of your brushes.

@Noel Orridge can you please read my post above again, it's still freezing on my work PC, as I mentioned above I used the cleaner tool to remove all Adobe apps, I deleted all Adobe folders from both the local and roaming profile folders.

Reinstalled version 26.11 again and still the same issue.

Just installed it on my home PC, different spec, and I'm not seeing the issue on that one.

@Noel Orridge I installed version 26.11 again to test and tried your suggestion of deleting the Brushes.psp file, Photoshop will open fine for a while but after a couple of restarts of Photoshop is hanging again, sometimes it will open fine, and sometimes it just hangs, it's very intermittent.

自分も同じ状況だったので試行錯誤して解決しました。

結果として、どうやら「Pattern」を引き継いでアップデートするとブラシの読み込みで起動が止まってしまうようです。なので、Shift keyを押しながらPhotoshopを起動して「Pattern」ウィンドウで自分で読み込んだパターンを削除してやると自分の場合は次回も普通に起動することができました。

Photoshopのアンインストール、再インストールもやらなくていいです。

でもこの不具合は修正してほしいですよね。

Hi @Ged_Traynor, I apologize for the confusion and oversight on my end. Thank you for trying out the suggestion. It's unfortunate that it didn't work out. Could we take a look at your system info?

In the meantime, please try these steps and see if they fix the issue.

1) Run the Photoshop Application as an Administrator by right-clicking. You can find it here: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2025

2) Temporarily disable your antivirus or endpoint protection software. Try launching Photoshop.

3) Please make sure the GPU drivers are updated to the latest studio version.

@Noel Orridge it's not freezing as much now for some unknown reason, I can restart Photoshop about 10 times in a row without it happening, but then out of nowhere it will happen again, if I close Photoshop after the freeze and reload it again it works fine until the next time it happens, it's totally random.

I can't disable the AV as we're on a managed network, I have full admin rights to the PC.

Nvidia driver is up to date, no futher updates for the Intel.

I've also noticed a random freeze on this bit as well, but that has only happened twice so far.

I've also checked Windows event viewer and there's no helpful info in the crash log for Photoshop.exe

Hi @Ged_Traynor! It's good to know that freezing is less frequent now. Thank you for sharing your system information.

Since you have dual GPUs on the system. Let's try this:

1) Go to Windows Settings > System > Display.

2) Scroll down and click on Graphics settings.

3) Under "Choose an app to set preference," select Desktop app and click Browse.

4) Navigate to Photoshop's installation folder and select Photoshop.exe. The default path is:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2025\Photoshop.exe

5) Once added, click on Adobe Photoshop in the list, click Options, and select High performance (NVIDIA Quadro P620).

4) Click Save and restart your computer.

Try this as well if the above doesn't work:

In the same Graphics settings window above, click Advanced graphics settings and toggle off "Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling".

Hi @Noel Orridge I tried all the suggestions, alas it didn't resolve the issue, I can live with the occasional hang as it doesn't happen that often at the moment and I don't use Photoshop much on my work PC, it's running fine on my home PC which is where I use Photoshop the most.

Mine doesn't even get to Reading brushes before it crashes. For some reason, mine crashes at Building color conversion tables.

@tslewis123 Just on a hunch, I would guess that this is an off-spec monitor profile, likely distributed from the monitor/laptop manufacturer through Windows Update. Manufacturer monitor profiles are strangely often problematic in various ways. To test this, replace your current profile with a standard profile like sRGB in Windows, or better, use a calibrator to make a new custom profile.

For some reason, unchecking Use Graphics Processor seems to fix it. I ran it twice with Use Graphics Processor unchecked and it worked perfectly, then ran it once with it checked and it crashed.

I just installed this version and the freezes during launch immediately begun (at the Reading brushes step). I already reset settings multiple times, that didn't help. I deleted the Brushes.psp file, that seems to have fixed it, but I'm not happy that I had to delete all my brushes to make this work.

@D Fosse I don't think it's a problem with the color profile. Deleting the Brushes.psp file fixed it until I reinstalled my brushes, so I'm pretty sure it's the same problem everyone else in this thread is having, considering Building color conversion tables is right before Reading brushes in the load screen.

Seit dem Update 26.11 häng sich mein Photoshop immer beim Starten auf. es steht immer da , Pinsel werden geladen " dann friert es ein. Auch eine neuinstallation hat es nicht gebracht. Ich bitte um Hilfe

I'm one of the many who is getting the freezing error on reading brushes with 26.11.

I've tried all the suggestions here with no success.
Shift+CTRL+alt to remove preferences works only for that singular launch, but upon closing and reopening the program again, it hangs.
Removing everything from my presets makes no difference.

Not sure what else to try.

Mine is freezing on "Building Color Conversion Tables".

I restarted while holding 'shift' to start without plugins & third party etc.
It started no problem.
I then quit PS, and did a normal start and it started as normal.
Bug returns when you next start Photoshop, or after a few successful launches.

As noted by otherwise, disabling 'GPU Compositing' seems to solve the issue (I've tested 10+ restarts of PS after this change without it freezing).
