22.1 and 2021 Program error problems

Community Beginner ,
Dec 20, 2020 Dec 20, 2020

Hello,

Wondering if anybody can help. I have been using 2021 for a while, but all of a sudden, in the past few days , it is giving me 'program error' when I am using files that perhaps were done in 2020. Not too logn ago really, I am talkign about files created for many of our books in the past year or two.

If I try to copy and paste anythign from a 2020 file into a current file, it will not let me save due to a 'Program error'. I just insattled 22.1 and have a small bit of relief, with some files lettign me copy and paste (really old files. But many files from the past year giving me this error.

It is BEYOND infuriating and I am on dadlien and wrestlign with this and very poor workflow as a result for th eetter part of a week.

I am pretty tired of Adobe prodcuts at this point. They charge through the roof for them. If anybody has any ideas that would be great.

ps when I installed 22.1 it said that it will work with this computer. I am on a late 2014 mc mini with Catalina running.

Many thanks,

Craig

Hi! update to Photoshop 22.1.1 as it fixes the "program error" issue: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/fixed-issues.html

If the update does not appear in the CC app, go to help>check for updates.

Yes, I did that and thank god it worked. I uninstalled all photoshop 2021 and the latest updates, and went back to 2020 and there are no more bugs. I will keep this as long as I can as the new photoshops are horrible.

Many thanks.

C

I'm having the same problem and running late '14 MacMini/Catalina, but I cannot save or do what most of the related posts suggest.  And I can no longer get any changes to a layer to save.

If I make a correction and then try torestart, I lose the file that started this mess.  It's a very important piece of art and I cannot lost it!!!

Any more suggestions???

Yes, I could not -

-Save older files (before 2021), I am talking really new files, from just a few months to a year ago.

- Paste from older files

-Pasting anythign from older files into new files created a program error, and would not save. If I deleted the pasted layer, suddenyl my file would save again.

-Some older files would just not open, and ALL did not save. So photoshop became completely unworkable.

I UNINSTALLED all photoshop 2021 and 22.1. Then installed 2020. Or at least the earliest 2020 version they have on the CC APP. Once I did this, I had no problems and photoshop is now running as it should with no bugs.

Good luck!!!!!!

I too have started having this infuriating error message, costing me hours in tedious work. I've been using Photoshop since the 80's, but I still can't remember to save my files periodically. So far, the only 'fix' that I've found was to start using an old version of Photoshop that I accidentally hadn't uninstalled - CS3. This error didn't start until a recent upgrade was made, so it probably is a bug in the new software. Unfortunately, I don't know how to ask Adobe about it directly.

I have the same issue. From my observation it starts when I try to transform a selection "select and mask" cmd option R. This does not apply at all and after I cannot save or save as.

Hello  ~

I'm posting this info I found from another area dealing with this issue.  I doubt that I'm as advanced as a user compared to many of you, so I will just say that I'm being the messenger here 😉

What I found -- and what WORKED for me -- is that if you are in 16bit mode and change to 8bit mode, you can merge layers ( and get NO error code).  I've done this with a couple of art projects and then changed back to 16bit mode and all worked fine.

I'm guessing here, but I'm chalking this odditiy to a glitch that pops up occassionally now that I have the subscription insted of program on my computer.  Like with so much these days in the world of subscriptions, we have little control or choice and it's annoying beyond words. I used CS 3 for years with almost NO problems.  Same with CS6, but was forced to get PS by subscription when I updated my Mac.

Referencing this current error code issue, I lost my original work -- it was heartbreaking -- but I screen shot most of the layers so I had some referenc to recreate.  It was loads of time in the process, so I'd really like the Adobe folks to consider 2 things;

1.  Fix these gitches.

2.  Educate your staff who post on the boards to execute their instructions step by step with CLARITY, keeping in mind that we are not ALL major Photoshop geeks!  Wishing we were ... working at it but still ... GIVE us a break!  I looked at a few suggestions posted by experts and they were ineffective, and certainly seemed to be missing some steps.  That is soooo NOT COOL!

Best of luck to all who are having these difficulties!

thanks for sharing your experience. Unfortunately 8bit isn't an option neither for my workflow nor would my clients accept 8bit files.

I am back to PS 2020.

Sorry, hoped that changing to get file saved or merged then change back to 16bit would work.  Sure did for me.  Good luck solving your issue 😃

sorry mate, that's a big mistake. If you transform your file to 8bit it will stay 8bit no matter if you go back to 16bit. You have lost the information after your 1st transformation to 8bit. You still have only 256 steps per color streched into 65,536 steps

2020 works fine. No issues at all. I'm just mad about Adobe delivering such a piece of crap.
