A really basic question, how do I highlight layers in Photoshop?

Hi, complete beginner here. I'm trying to cover a part of a game UI to make a template for my own UI design. I loaded a game screenshot onto Photoshop and covered the part I want to erase with a rectangle filled with the same background color. But now when I select the rectangle layer I can't tell it's exact location because it's blended in to the background image, as you can see in the two images above. Is there a way to highlight the selected layers in Photoshop?

Oh and when I tried using the Spot Healing Brush tool (shortcut J), it didn't do anything to the background image. Is there perhaps a more efficient way to do what I'm trying to do? 

Excuse me for asking something very basic, I couldn't find the answer to my question on google. Thank you.

Your move tool is active in the screenshot, therefore all you need to do is tick the "show transform controls" checkbox in the toolbar.

Oh now I remember, I thought the blue outline was a bit annoying to leave on when I first started using Photoshop a few days ago. Didn't notice it was gone until now, I must've turned it off somehow without even realizing. Anyways, thank you for the reply!

Do you mean to see bounding box of selected layer? Check Show Transform Controls with the Move tool active as on screenshot below.

If you want to make layer active or to select it in the Layers panel by clicking on content on canvas then check Auto Select > Layer in the options bar with the Move tool active. Hovewer beware that overlay layer set to, lets say 10% opacity, that sits on top of layers stack will be always selected insted of layer with content that you are clicking on canvas.

Update: apologies, somehow I misread that @Stephen Marsh  is suggesting Auto Select > Layer before replying, I have updated my answer.

Thank you for the reply. So in case of your example, if I want to select the layer underneath the opacity overlay layer, I have to access it through the layer list? Feels like things can get a bit messy when working with a lot of layers.

You have another option: context menu, right click above content on canvas then choose layer name or group name from the list.
