Abnormal use of RAM in Photoshop 25.0

hello

i compared Photoshop 22.2 and 25.0 with the SAME batch script on the SAME files.

Photoshop 25 is running out of RAM much much quickly ! see below.

can you please repair this bug ?

What is your memory allocation set to in Preferences?

80% in both cases.

i'm experiencing a lot of crashes of Photoshop 25 because of RAM overflow ; none with Photoshop 22 ..

Photoshop doesn't crash because of low RAM. Photoshop's memory requirement will normally exceed whatever RAM you may have installed, no matter how much you have. This is why Photoshop has a scratch disk, that's what carries the heavy memory load. The scratch disk is Photoshop's main memory; RAM is more like a cache. Low RAM is normal, and it will in most cases saturate up to the limit you set in Preferences.

So the memory usage in itself is nothing special. What's special is the difference. I can't explain that.

The crashing is something else, and the most likely cause is the GPU. I'd say about 95% of all crashes reported here are GPU-related. A new Photoshop version will have new GPU functions and new calls to the GPU, and latent problems can come to the surface.

Post Help > System Info. That might give a clue.

However there is still a difference in the RAM management between the 2 versions : i made the same exact test which is to batch open 400 jpg files ; version 25 crashes excatly when RAM is saturated :

at the same point, version 22's RAM is much lower, why ??

That shouldn't happen, or at least not for this reason.

I think you need to post Help > System Info. That might give some clues.

No, I can't explain this. It's certainly not normal behavior, and it's not common behavior. We'd hear about it, and we havent. I had almost "hoped" this was a dual GPU machine that also had an integrated GPU - integrated GPUs use shared system memory and can be a huge drain. But that wasn't it either.

Memory usage shouldn't increase significantly in a batch. The memory from the first file will be reused for the second file and so on.

We need to see exactly where this memory goes. What does it say in Task Manager > Processes?

"Preferences > Performance... and uncheck both Multithreaded Compositing and GPU Compositing"

is that normal ? do i lose perfmances ?

in version 22 GPU Compositing is checked (Multithreaded Compositing doesnt exist)

OK, that does suggest that this is GPU-related.

Reinstall a new GPU driver. Make sure to install the Studio driver, not the Game Ready driver. Choose custom install and check Clean Install. That will remove all traces of the old driver. Uncheck the extra components in the driver package (GeForce Experience, PhysX), you don't need them.

Then reset Photoshop preferences while you're at it.

i updated the GPU driver as you said but nothing changed.

RAM got full, Photoshop crashed and my computer was freezed.

Aftter killing Photoshop process, RAM emptied and i could use my computer again.

Too be honest, I find the RAM usage of Photoshop CC really bad. Photoshop CS6 was way better in handling that. I normally have a workflow where I open about 4 to 6 RAW files at the same time. Which I close after editing (without exiting Ps) and then open the next files... Instead of freeing the RAM for the closed files, the usage gets higher and higher. Not that long ago I had to process lots of photos... And checked my RAM usage after some time of editing... 96 GB of my 128 GB RAM were already in use. Only closing Ps frees the RAM.

It would be nice, if the RAM for could be freed when closing a file.
