Hi, anytime I open an adjustment layer in photoshop cc 2017 (not that I have had any other) I have to separately click on a layer mask to get a mask along side it, am I missing something in settings?

You're welcome. Most of the panels have a menu - it's always worth a look inside if the panel items appear to act strangely
