Adobe Save for Web error

Community Beginner ,

Capture d’écran 2023-10-17 à 16.51.58.png

I have been experiencing this error for a while now. When trying to save for web it stops working and gives the warning "Save for web error" "Could not complete this operation. A writer permissions error has occured."
Everytme I tried the different solutions found online and they worked just fine but not this time. Everything was fine yesterday but today it just does not want to write this file.
I have tried the following:

1) reset preferences

2) update photoshop

3) Restart photoshop

4) Restart system

5) Give photoshop a complete write access to the disk

6) Checking that file and image sizes are the same

7) Trying different formats

I am on Photoshop 25.0, please help.

Does it happens only with this file?

Thank you for the feedback but as described in my original post I have already tried all these methods with no success.
Update I also have Photoshop 2023 installed and the Save for web works just fine with that version. It is only with Photoshop 2024 that there seems to be a problem.

I have the same issue, which means that when making ani gifs that should usually be a 30 second job I have now spent hours trying to get this to work. Nothing works from the points 1-7 above. Neither does a legacy version PS 2021. This was working a couple of weeks ago and seems to somehow stopped working with exactly the same file I used, exactly the same permissions etc.. ... this happens from time to time and its very frustrating to seemlingly happen spontaneously without cause.

Hello, I got some feedback from Adobe and unfortunately the only answer they had was to update the version to the latest but here is the catch: my computer is too old for the newest version so I got to roll back to an older version. So yeah, their answer was basically: change your computer... And of course I still have to pay for the updates I cannot use!

I have the same issue, and I have the newest version of all the software, so that is not the cause. Also with me this is a problem that keeps occurring. And now I even can't record the save as to an action.

Did you try to run an older version like 2023? If this works it probably means that your CPU is too old to run the newest versions (that is the feedback I got from Adobe).

Hmmm, my computer is only 6 months old and everyone else on my team does not seem to be having this issue. I did just upgrade my Sonoma but other people on my team have the same version Sonoma as well. I am going to try and uninstall and re-install

I've got a work around, I run photoshop v25.9 and it's not fixed.

Click on the 'preview optimized image in web browser' (bottom left or your 'save for web') it'll open up a new browser window and it's created the gif. Then drag and drop on to your desktop to send or save where ever it needs to be.

This workaround works to save the image as well.  I had to default to "Export As" which allowed me to change the file type and dimensions.  I wasn't able to do an action and batch my process though.  Adobe please fix!  Thanks

it's so weird. Export for web now doesn't work on my pre M1 chip mac PS25.9+, but I was able to export using photoshop beta on my M1 based laptop. The workaround is genius though. Thank you.

I can make optimized JPGs with Export As... Maybe that finally killed the legacy?

Hi, I tried the "no metadata" suggestion.
But I still get the "Could not write the file".

I found out what my specific problem was.

I had disabled in the smb.conf Samba configuration file the creation of those very annoying ._ files.

That is (for some inexplicable reason) why Photoshop refused to save Save-For-Web files. All else worked like "Save" and "Save as" and "Save as Copy". Just "Save for Web" seemed to have a problem with the "Veto ._*" files.

@bert_bulder How did you fix the smb.conf? Is there a reset that works? I just updated to Photoshop 2025 and having the problem described in this thread. Would love to fix it as I sometimes prefer to use Save for Web instead of Export.

Hi Kelly. I added
veto files = /._*/.DS_Store/
to the section with path = /var/www/debian, my webroot,

in /etc/samba/smb.conf

That is when the Save for Web gave problems.

Ater removing

veto files = /._*/.DS_Store/

Save for Web worked again.

I am on Photoshop 26.1.0 and this happens to me every week. I've tried everything you listed too. The only solution that works for me is resetting preferences... and I have to do this once a week. It's annoying as I'll loose my preferences.

I have also tried everything and have the latest version of Photoshop running on a new MacBook. Apparently the issue somehow has something to do with the DropBox backup of Desktop and Documents Folder. I tried to disable the backup but that means all my backups will be deleted from DropBox which is not ideal. I tried christinef71940645 workaround and for me that seems to be the only way I can save an animated gif!
