I need help Asian characters is just showing as BOX with X on it when using text tool

The 
Edit > Preferences > Type

• Show Asian Text Options to display Asian type options.

Is not showing under Edit > Preferences > Type

Most often that box with the X means the typeface is not installed.

• What is the typeface?
• What language are you using?
• Are you using copy and paste or typing the text?
• Can you show a screenshot with text selected and the Character panel (Window menu)?
