Auto blend layers is very slow

I do some large photo stacks of close-ups. Typically the time for an auto-blend layers for the very largest ones is about one or two minutes. For the last few days, this has blown out to several hours for no apparent reason. I have turned off all unnecessary programs on the computer.

Have you restarted your computer recently? How much free hard drive space do you have? If there's not enough scratch disk Photoshop can slow down.

Thanks, There is plenty of memory available. I've ecountered that problem before and it manifests itself differently.

Hi

You've not given us much to go on. Descriptions such as "large photo stacks", "very largest ones" , "plenty of memory" along with no system information are all pretty meaningless.

Please go to Photoshop's Help >System info and press the copy button. Then paste the info here. In addition what dimension (in pixels) are the images and how many make a stack?

Hi davescm, sorry about the slow reply but it has been overnight in Australia. I've been trying to stack 12 JPEGS 4912 X 7360. Such a stack normally took photoshop about 2 minutes to process. This has now blown out to 4 hours or so. When I have tried a stack of 16, it normally takes three or four minutes and it has blown out to six or seven hours. I have also noticed that auto align has slowed down but it isnt as big an issue as auto-blend.

Have you recently updated the drivers for your video card?
On the Plug-ins tab, temporarily disable "Load extentions Panel"
Restart photoshop. Don't open files. Turn on the GPU checkbox, go to Advanced Setting, turn off Open CL.
Click Ok. Then restart photoshop. Turn on "Load extentions Panel" back. Restart photoshop.

Doesn't it fall?
If not, check the speed of your operations.

Hi

Thanks for posting the system info and the info regarding exactly what you are doing.

There are a few things to fix and some possible improvements. So starting at the top :

1. You are using Photoshop version 20.0.10 The current version is 21.1.2 so you may want to consider running the update.

2. You mention that all your Photoshop settings are on their defaults. Photoshop has user settings, but also records internal system settings every time it closes. If there is a problem on closure these can become corrupt so it will be worth going to Edit > Preferences >General and clicking Reset Preferences on Quit then press OK and close and restart Photoshop.

3. Photoshop is seeing 3 GPUs (2AMD and 1 Intel) but enabling OpenGL on none of them. If the preference reset does not address that issue, then take a look here :

In particular look at updating the GPU drivers and see sections 7 and 8 on multiple GPUs

4. Your scratch disk is showing 55GB free which would normally be sufficient but you may run into issues when auto-blending large numbers of images, where Photoshop will definitely use the scratch disk. Photoshop opens using around 5GB of scratch space and takes what it needs. I'll try a similar stack late today and see what scratch disk space is used.

The problem is now fixed. For whatever reason, I had the two versions of Photoshop loaded on my computer and without knowing I had been using the old version. The new one works correctly. Problem solved!

Do you have enough memory? How about your scratch disk?

You can go to editL Purge and purge meory.

Another one is to go to prefences and turn on the Graphics Card.

Also turn off the saving in background and saving temp files.
