When I open clips  in photoshop they are numbered  as : layer 1 ,  layer 2,  layer 3 and they is no background layer.   Seems as thought the background layer is completely gone altogether .

How do I get the named "background layer" back once again ?

Thanks.

Do you need a background layer? If you really want one, either make a new layer and place it at the bottom of the layer stack, or select the original bottom layer, then go to the menu bar and select layers>new>background from layer.

Thanks again , but then why do the majority of all tutorials and instructors act and say that it is a "sin"  not to have a background layer ?

If instructors are saying that, then they are behind the times and really don't know what they're taking about. I will often delete the background layer if it's not needed or convert it to a standard layer.
