Best way to reduce the file size of an image 600mb to 125mb

I'm making a banner . It's a panoramic shot , I merged 18 images to make it . Now the file size is 600mb's . The company that prints the banner only excepts files up to 125mb's. They except jpegs , pdf's, Tiff's and Eps.I change the mode from 16 to 8. Then I try and do all kind of things . I'm getting real good at making large panoramic's , but I don't know how to shrink the file size.

Help !

30,000 pixels! What size banner and what viewing distance?
At 10 feet viewing distance, 30000 pixels wide would make a banner 44 feet wide, which in turn is unlikely to be viewed as close as 10 feet

How large is that panorama in megapixels and how large does it get printed? I find it hard to believe that you would not be able to save this in JPEG and keep within 125 MB.

You may be able to simply resize it in the 'Image Size' dialog. Many people think that images should always be printed at 300 ppi, but that is not true. Very large prints don't have to be printed at 300 ppi because they won't be viewed from up close. Billboards are usually printed in a resolution as low as 10 ppi.

I reduced it to a jpeg at 12 setting highest quality . They said it was to pixilated to print . When I sent tiffs or pdf's it worked out. But it was a trial and error would take me an hour to reduce . Took me awhile to figure out to be below 30,000 pixels before you were able to save as a pdf.

That doesn‘t sound right. The JPEG format wouldn't pixelate an image. At a lower quality setting compession artifacts could become visible, but at 12 the artifacts would be minimal and shouldn’t be visible in print. The default print PDF/X-4 preset uses Maximum Quality JPEG compression and it simply doesn’t produce any printable artifacts. It sounds like something is happening to the image at the printer.

The smallest file size from a photographic image will be from a jpeg file. Reduce the quality setting (i.e. increase compression) until you hit the target file size.

Note - make sure you are not using an unnecessarily high resolution - which in turn leads to a very large pixel size. Viewing a large image from a distance does not requires the same number of pixels per inch as an image viewed at book reading distance.

A quick forumula for working out the required ppi is :

ppi required = 6878/Viewing distance in inches
