Blending Modes

Several of my blending modes in photoshop are greyed out and I can no longer use them. I was repeating a process with photos and then all of a sudden it's greyed out and I can't find any solutions to fix it. I'm using the most up to date version so not sure what's happened any suggestions would be appreciated.
