Hi There,
There seems to be a trend to create UI that covers the thing you're working on (like the task bar) with the latest being the bounding box that always appears (at least it does for me).
I've found answers but can't get back to the more useful, previous behaviour which was...
- Show bounding box only while transforming
- No bounding box when not transforming
Sorry if missing something basic here but does anyone know how to stop this UI getting in the way of your work?
Cheers, Ben
OK, it seems the specific option has now been moved from under the cog, untick it from here...
Counterintuitively, when you Transform, it still shows the transform control box even though 'Show Transform Controls' is now unchecked. Does logic exist anymore or am I missing something basic here?

I think I understand what you're trying to say, but let me restate.
Two of the settings gear checkboxes involved in hover
☐ Show layer bounds on hover
☐ Show bounding box from layer
don't work as expected. You state that the former (before what? update?) behavior was
- Show bounding box only while transforming
- No bounding box when not transforming
If I uncheck those boxes, I do get that behavior when the layer is not selected.
I can't get the bounding box to always appear.
If it would help, we could record our screens then post the movie.

The checkbox was historically located in the options bar, was then briefly moved/hidden under the gear/cog and then relocated back to where it always has been after many complaints.
By design, it's active while transforming, despite the checkbox. The checkbox is controlling the visibility of the transform box when the layer is selected/targeted/active when one is not transforming.

@Stephen Marsh I became familair with it when it was in the cog, hence the initial comment.

The checkbox labelled 'Show Transform Controls' has no effect while transforming? It's insane!

That's opposite to what I wrote.

Except that's the behaviour - it's insane. If the checkbox has nothing to do with transforming then DON'T INCLUDE THE WORD TRANSFORM IN IT'S NAME!
That checkbox should be renamed to 'Show Translate Controls' to reflect that it controls the bounding box while translating. Transform is a specific tool which we both agree has nothing to do with that checkbox, despite it being labelled as a Transform control.

I may not understand your point. Is this semantics, functionality or both?
With the checkbox active, It's only move (translate) – if no transform point handle is accessed. So I agree that while this is taking place transform isn't engaged.
Once one of the 8 transform points is changed, then Free Transform mode is automatically engaged until cancelled or committed.
I don't think that the checkbox is misnamed, if enabled the transform handles are available to engage the transform without requiring a separate Free Transform step which would be required when the checkbox is disabled.
