Can I disable sMarT oBjeCtS?

What is going on, Adobe? I paste an image onto another image and cannot just simply select and delete part of the pasted image because it's a "smart object." When did this start? This behavior is new to me. Can I turn it off?

You can disable this in the Preferences by going to the Photoshop menu > Settings > General and unchecking "Always Create Smart Objects when Placing"

I am going to suggest that you leave it as it is, and use Smart Objects

If you want to 'hide' part of the SO, then add a Layer Mask and paint it out with black.

If you want to further edit the SO, double click it to open it in a new window.

Smart Objects are one of the most useful features on Photoshop.

They let you work non destructively.

They keep the Layers Panel more tidy, and are more transparent (you can see what is going on) than using Groups).

You can add temporary layers to aid editing the SO.

You can save the SO from its editing new window as a new PSD/PSB file to use it elsewhere.

You can drag it to a Creative Cloud Library making it available to use in other projects anywhere in the world that has an Internet connection.  This is one of my favourite features.

I don't need non destructive editing. SMaRt oBjeCtS just complicates what should be a simple process in retouching and composting. Plus, it opens the door for others to mess up an image file by either making changes I myself hadn't intended or by accidentally turning off a layer. I've been absolutely fine for 30 years without it.
