Hello everyone! I have had this problem for a few months now and can't figure out what is wrong.
Previously, I could create pdf files in Illustrator and then later open them in Photoshop. I don't know if I "clicked" on something that I shouldn't have or what, but now when I try to open a pdf file, Photoshop opens the file, but it is displayed on the screen as a small pixelated thumbnail. Has anyone ever had this happen?
Suggestions please!

The correct way to edit is:
First: open the source document, make the edits, make a new PDF
Second: if you don't have the source document, open the PDF in Acrobat and make the edits
If you want to open the PDF in Photoshop, and if it is an image, will it work for you to:
File > Export To > Image > JPEG/TIFF/PNG?
If not, please explain what your workflow is that you need to open a PDF in Photoshop.

Thank you so much for your reply.
I am creating/printing labels in Photoshop and want to open the pdf files (label templates) to add as a layer. I will try to open the file in Illustrator and then export it as a png file. I just don't understand why the pdf files will no longer open properly in Photoshop, when they had done so without a problem for years.
Thank you again!

Can you File > Place the Illustrator file into Photoshop? It would come in as a Smart Object.

Thank you!
This is what it looks like when I try to open a pdf file, or if I file-place it in Photoshop. A tiny little image in the middle of the screen, and a little bigger pixelated image as a layer.

Please show your PDF open dialog in Photoshop and all its settings. Also please tell us the page size of the PDF in inches or mm as shown by Acrobat.

I remember years ago, this was the norm. Which meant there was no thumbnail attached. Check the settings for exporting as a pdf and make sure it includes the image which should be tiff or jpg. I also think png maybe an option but been awhile.
I was thinking the method now was to render the pdf on import, but it may still be using the embedded image.
Try doing a copy and paste between illustrator and photoshop. Also when importing into photoshop, make sure the pixel size matches between photoshop and illustrator. There was a bug, but I assumed it was fixed.
Sorry it has been awhile.
