Cannot Change Feathering in a Layer Mask

Community Beginner ,

I am using Photoshop CC Version 20.0.2 on a Windows Pro based operating system. Once I've applied the number of pixels to a layer mask in the Properties panel and click okay, I can never refine or change the size of that feather. I've spent a great deal of time with Chat and they didn't understand what I was asking. So here's the sequence of events. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

1. Create a layer mask. Click on the layer mask thumbnail to open the Properties panel.

2. Change the feathering amount to say 150 pixels, applied to the layer mask. Click okay.

3. Review the effect. Decide to change the amount of feathering, specifically to decrease it.

4. Click on layer mask thumbnail to open the Properties panel. The amount of feathering is shown as 0.0 pixels, even though 150 pixels of feathering has been applied.

Doesn't matter what the blend mode is, there still is no means to decrease or change the amount of feathering. Am I missing something?

Wait, I just found the selection Edit in Quick Mask Mode under Select. That has fixed the problem! Thanks for helping me figure this out!

There's no okay button in my Layer Mask properties panel:

You should be able to change the Feather amount non-destructively. Are you talking about something else...?

There is an OK button in the select and mask dialog box. Perhaps using the feather there instead?

I see - once OK'ed the feather amount is final in Select and Mask.

Is there a way to get to the mask to apply feathering in the new Photoshop without getting to that Select and Mask Properties panel?

Maybe this screenshot will show you where I'm applying the feathering and checking okay. Any other way to adjust the mask WITHOUT getting into that Properties panel which seems to make any adjustments final?Feather Added in Properties Box.jpg

If you don't apply Feather in the Select and Mask workspace and click OK, then select the layer mask in the Layers panel, it will give you the ability to change the feather in the mask Properties panel.

How do I NOT select "Select and Mask." I'm not specifically choosing that. It seems to default to that setting. Is there something I need to change?

Screen Shots.jpgOkay maybe these screen shots will explain what I mean. I'm just using the old methods in the updated Photoshop CC 2019 with feathering. I used to be able to adjust the feathering but now when I click on the mask, I go to properties. Once I click "Okay," there's no way to change the feathering unless I delete the action in history. I suppose I might try multiple comp layers, but it used to be easy just to adjust the feathering by going back into the mask.

Actually, Adobe just told me there's even a simpler answer to the question...just check the "Remember settings" ad the bottom of the Properties panel. This will keep the number of pixels that were added to the feather, but will NOT allow you to change the amount of feathering. So Edit in Quick Mask it is! Thanks for the help!
