Cannot Select layer mask

Using Photoshop today (as i do on a regular basis) and i find i cannot directly and easily select the layer mask on a layer.  where i used to just left click the layer mask to make it the active layer i am working on now if i click the layer mask of any layer it doesn't select the layer at all.

clicking on ANY of the circled masks on the doc DOES NOT SELECT the layer AT ALL

Can you check that you are not in quick mask mode? You can toggle quick mask by pressing "Q"

You are in quick mask mode what is indicated with red overlay in the Layers panel. Exit quick mask as suggested and remember to check for reddish overlay when you have same problem next time. There is also keyboard shortccut to select layer mask: Ctrl/Cmd + \ (backslash). If suggestion does not work keep asking and posting screenshots.
