Changing shape color no longer works

Hi all - I've used PS for years on a casual basis. I've changed shape colors hundreds of times with no problem. Recently, when I bring up my color picker, change the color and hit OK, nothing changes. Same when I use the the task bar for choosing color. No matter where I double click in my layer's shape box, I get the Layer Style dialog. So I have to double click on the foreground color. But again, whether I choose a color from another layer or from the color picker itself and hit OK, no change. Here are some screen shots. I've Googled this like crazy with no results. (Hoping it'ssomething obvious) Thanks so much!

And again no Options Bar in the fragmentary screenshots … please just post a meaningful and complete screenshot already.

The screenshot seems to show that this time the selected Layer is indeed a Shape Layer.

But just to make sure: You double-click the Layer’s icon in the Layers Panel, not the Rectangle Tool’s icon in the Toolbar?

What have you done for general trouble-shooting so far?

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

If you are using the options bar as in one of your screenshots:

    • Confirm the shape is selected
    • Click the button in red to open the Color Picker
    • Click a new color

You didn't mention how you are opening the color picker. If this doesn't work, please give us your exact steps.

Thank you C_P and Jane-e.....To your point, here is the sequence I've been using:

    1. Create new layer

    2. Choose Shape from the Shape Tool in the toolbar.  (see screenshot attached)

    3. Double click on the thumbnail to bring up the color picker. Choose color and OK. Nothing changes.

    4. Try double clicking the foreground color. Choose new color, hit OK, nothing changes.

    5. Try clicking color on the taskbar, making sure the color picker is chosen, choosing color and nothing.

    6. Second screenshot shows a closeup of the thumbnail of my rectangle. Shape layer I believe?

Note: when I double click on the thumbnail and choose a new color and hit OK, this appears on the shape. (see 3rd screenshot)

Thanks for your patience with me!

Obviously the selected Layer is no Shape Layer but a plain pixel Layer.

But if the screenshots were more meaningful and included the Options Bar and the Tool used to create the Layer was selected we could see if said Tool was set to »Shape«, »Path« or »Pixels«.

I moved your post over from the poorly named Community Help forum, which is for getting help using this forum system, to a better forum, PS.
