Hi, my channels tab is affecting all layers and not just the selected layer. I'm watching tutorials and they edit only the selected layer. is this an option to set, I can't find it. thanks

That's how it's supposed to work. Channels are document-level, along another "dimension" than layers.
They are color components, three in RGB, four in CMYK, one in grayscale.
The layer structure is reflected in each channel just like the entire document.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cT9aeo-LIOw In this tutorial he uses a channel that affects only one layer, and in this one https://photoshoptrainingchannel.com/photoshop-masking-tricks/

Thanks just noticed he turned one of the layers off, in the first tutorial. In the second tutorial though it seems to only show the snow in the channel tab.

The only layer specific channel that I can think of is a raster layer mask, which is a type of alpha channel, not image colour mode channel.

I was thinking along those lines. We need to see a screen shot of the Channels panel — or Darren needs to tell us if there is more than the standard four channels in that panel?

I had a quick flick through Darren's first link and there is a copy of the green channel at one point, which is selected with the other channels turned off. Is that causing you confusion Darren?

Thanks all, ive been working on a lot of 3d things lately, I think my knowledge and skills in photoshop have taken a dive. It was both the green channel that was turned off, and in the first tutorial both layers were the same size (filled the art board/canvas). and that totally threw me. Thanks again.
