clone tool not working

I'm a photoshop beginner.. I can't get the clone tool to work, it did fine in the begining, now everytime I try, it says: 'could not use the clone stamp because the area to be cloned has not been defined'

How do i fix that? I tried different pictures, reset the tool ect.

Nobody can tell you anything without exact system info or other technical details. That said, what are the actual tool settings? Where do you Alt+click to define the sampel region?
