Cooltype.dll error crashes Photoshop 2020 on file open

Photoshop 2019 functions normally, but PS2020 crashes attempting to open any acceptable file. Windows 10 pins the blame on Cooltype.dll, an Adobe component. Adobe Support sent a replacement CoolType.dll file, didn't solve the issue

The problem lies with Extensis Suitcase Fusion, a font management app, and its installation procedure of auto-starting in the background at bootup. The issue also applies to Premiere Pro 2020 which has been crashing at its splash screen. Cooltype.dll is innocent — though named in Windows application errors, Windows captured only the moment in time when PS2020 crashed. Here's a workaround...

Delete Extensis Font Management Core in Windows Task Manager's processes tab.
Relaunch Suitcase Fusion, then close its Window. Doing so creates a new font management process which will successfully run in the background.
Photoshop 2020 should now allow you to open documents.

Extensis support group Zendesk, which has been steadfastly in denial over the issue, declined to comment when I reported this workaround because I'd created a batch file to perform these actions with a single click. Extensis considered that "third-party software" a support deal-breaker. Zendesk washed their hands of the problem, not the first time they've done so when Suitcase Fusion has had issues.

For a more permanent fix, remove FMCore.exe from Startup in Task Manager. Just remember to launch Suitcase Fusion, then close its Window before launching Photoshop 2020 or Premiere Pro 2020. Haven't tried the process in After Effects 2020.

Thanks for the update! This was a weird one involving Type 1 fonts, Suitcase Fusion and the Adobe mystery allergy to CoolType.dll — or vice-versa. Happily, it's all been workd out, yet which fix was the magic bullet, I'm afraid we'll never know. Still it's great that Adobe and TrueType are BFFs again!

Thanks for providing the data on what you've tried so far and sorry about these Cooltype crashes with Photoshop.

When did this start for you? Can you think of anything that might have changed on your system that might contribute to this crash starting?

To investigate, would you be able to provide us with Photoshop's Help > System Info dialog text?

Feel free to paste it as a threaded reply to me here.

Also, when you crash, do you get a crash report popup? If so, have you been entering your email address into the crash report, or can you provide the crash report text here? (You could upload/attach a txt file to the thread as well)

Hi Pete,

This issue began with the arrival of PS2020. None of the updates have helped, and I've been forwarding popup crash reports — lots of them — complete with my email address to no avail, only a few subsequent popups indicating that Adobe "may have found an solution" — a web page, blaming my GTX 1080 GPUs and mistakenly suggesting I've not kept my drivers current. Still, that led to an extensive checkup with Nvidia support that proved the theory to be nonsense, a total waste of time.

I'm certain the culprit is Extensis Suitcase Fusion 9, the font management app which has changed its operability methods for CC2020 apps, dropping the use of plugins for individual CC apps in favor of an approach that crashes Premiere Pro 2020 as well as Photoshop 2020 — generating Premiere Pro 2020 application errors identical to Photoshop 2020 and which also blame CoolType.dll.

I have also discovered that when I terminate Extensis' Font Management Core process in Windows Task Manager, then relaunch Suitcase Fusion, both PS2020 and PPro2020 work perfectly, but ony after the relaunch of the Suitcase Fusion app is closed. Only then does an apparently benign version of the font management process become visible in Task Manager, allowing normal use of the CC apps until the next Windows bootup when Suitcase Fusion autoloads in the background. Extensis is in denial, but the workaround speaks for itself. And, both Photoshop 2019 and Premiere Pro 2019 have continued to function normally and without interruption before and after installing their 2020 iterations.

I've written a .bat file that performs the terminate-and-relaunch workaround with a single click. All that remains is to close the Suitcase app following font selection.
