Could not save because of a disk error (-1).

I did a lot of retouching work and suddenly couldn't save my file. When I save it, I get an error

"Could not save because of a disk error (-1)."

Now I can't close Photoshop without losing the work I've done. Please help me to solve the problem.


There is no choice of where to save the files, the error message appears immediately. Adobe has full disk access in the settings. The RAW files I'm working with are on an external disk. I have been working from it all day and have been saving files without any problems. The external ssd drive and the system disk have a lot of free space.

I tried to open files from the system drive in Photoshop - still the same - nothing is saved. Also tried creating and saving a file in photoshop. No kind of files can be saved.

I have macOS Monterey 12.3, M1, Photoshop was updated 3 days ago.

    Don't know is this still actual, but will probably help new people. I fixed this problem this way:
    > Open Activity Monitor
    > Search for "Open and Save Panel Service (Adobe Photoshop 20xx)"
    > Choose Force Quit - it will restart the "open/save" function

    The following a solution for me since nothing here provided a solution. Updated yesterday to Sequoia 15.3.2 and today began have the dreaded disk error. Check my drive capacity and tried everything here to no avail. I also noticed I was seeing 100% CPU usage in Activity Monitor for fileproviderd. I eventually found the following which worked for me. FYI, I had two folders in /FileProvider/ as described below and needed to remove the files noted below from both folders.

    fileproviderd maintains an SQLite database at this location:

    ~/Library/Application Support/FileProvider/*/database
    where * is a long hexadecimal string (a unique identifier, or UUID). There may be more than one such folder with different UUID's; in that case, you should repeat these steps for each one.

    Inside the database folder are files named db, db-shm, and db-wal. The first one contains the actual database, and the others are caches.

    Step 1

    Delete db-shm and db-wal. Force-quit fileproviderd in Activity Monitor or in the shell. It should restart immediately. The cache files you deleted will be recreated, perhaps after a delay. Test. If there's no improvement, continue.

    Step 2

    Disable iCloud Drive and all third-party cloud file-sync services, if any. Delete db, restart fileproviderd, and then re-enable iCloud Drive. The database will be rebuilt from scratch.

    None of your solutions works for me.

     

    When I try to save any file to the disk, the same error that has been reported in this post arised to me. And It's impossible to save it.

     

    The error is related also with the Finder.

     

    This is a big problem, because we're paying a program that doesn't work.

      To resolve the issue of not being able to save files in Photoshop due to the "disk error (-1)" message, try the following steps: First, restart Photoshop to see if the problem persists. Ensure that Photoshop has full disk access by checking under **System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy**. Clear the Photoshop cache by going to **Edit > Purge > All**, which may help with saving issues. Try saving the file to a different location, such as the system drive or another external drive, to rule out potential issues with the current save location. Additionally, close other applications to free up RAM, as low memory can sometimes cause saving errors. If these solutions don't work, consider restarting your Mac or reinstalling Photoshop.

        Hii @Dani_James thanks for your input here, im having this issue and not able to resolve it. I've tried restarting PS a few times but this keeps happening every few days. I've checked my 'full disk access' settings and not seeing Photshop in the list, but CC is there. Does this suffice or do you know if there's a way to add Photoshop in there just like Illustrator is? thanks!

          Don't know is this still actual, but will probably help new people. I fixed this problem this way:
          > Open Activity Monitor
          > Search for "Open and Save Panel Service (Adobe Photoshop 20xx)"
          > Choose Force Quit - it will restart the "open/save" function

                dont do this if you have yet to first save the file originally, lost all my work because it auto closed it while saving all my files on the cloud locally.

                Last time I just left my computer with photoshop on overnight. In the morning, the error was gone. And I was able to save my files without losing the work I had done. But the same error showed up again right now. I'm working with other files from another disk. I would not want to restart the program every time in such a case and risk losing my progress.

                Could you please solve this bug, so that I don't have to suddenly face the lack of a trivial possibility to save my files. Thanks.

                  Thank you for your advice. But obviously if I close the program or restart my computer, I may lose all the work I have done. That way is obvious. But I would like to solve this without losing my work.

                    Restart Photoshop, and if doesn't work then try after restarting your computer. You can also update and if still no result then reinstall it and again try it later. I hope something will work.
