how to i fix this? Could not parse the file contents as a data set. There were too many variable names in the first line of the text file.

No, Smart Object Layers cannot be used for replacement.

For readers not using smart objects, who see the error: "Could not parse the file contents as a data set. There were too many variable names in the first line of the text file."...

It is likely you're mentioning a variable in the text file (hence your spreadsheet if you're using one) that is not also listed in Photoshop > Image > Variables > Define, and as a Layer.

The error is misleading, since there are not 'too many' variables in the first row of the text file (or spreadsheet columns) per se. You can have lots of variables listed there.

What it really means is that there are more variables listed in the text file relative to those present in the Photoshop file. The relevant variable must be added to Photoshop or deleted from the spreadsheet and text file to synchronise them.

i found out the problem. My ID column was not named the same.I do have another question though. IS there a way to

 replace smart objects using data sets? just like a pixel replacement?
