Distort and wrap Linked object - is it possible?

if i convert it to smart object then it'll not be linked anymore.

I really need to distrot an image while keep update it's link from time to time.

When you use File > Place Linked..., Photoshop creates a Linked Smart Object for you. Then you can apply Smart Filters to the linked file and change the source whenever you want. Here's more info on Linked Smart Objects:

    i didnt mange to apply smart filters. it's grey out.

    but first of all, What exactlye are smart filters? will they let me apply distort and wrap?
