  • Photoshop v 24.7 updated 18 days ago, no updates available per CC, no issues in the last two weeks until today.
  • Have the full Adobe suite currently
  • Not a designeer but did technical drawings for years in Corel and have been using Photoshop since 1999. Ive used at least once a month for the last 10 years.  Would call myself advanced beginner or intermediate user. Small business owner who is comfortable creating graphics with PS and converting them to vector in Illustrator.

Started file in Fresco for iPad downloaded last week using vector brush layers.

Brought it into Illustrator for iPad downloaded this week.

Needed dual monitors to mess with paths, interestingly, file not showing up in cloud docs for Illustrator, but visible in CC. Had to export as PDF from Illustrator for iPad, email myself and save locally to get the file open. Got fed up and decided this would be quicker in Photoshop and since the file was showing up as a PSDC in PS desktop cloud files opened it there.

Let's call this File 1.

I'm tired, I need to get this done and decide to just start over from scratch in PS on desktop. We'll call this File 2. Pen tool would randomly quit working on me, just making a shape to fill on new layer. Disabled Flick Panning. Pen behaves.

Went to copy some elements from File 1 to File 2. Used Object Selection Tool, adjusted marching ants via select and mask. CTRL+C from File 1, CTRL+V  in File 2 creates new, empty layer. Oy Veh.

  • Right click, duplicate layer, select file 2. Same result.
  • CTRL+J also yields empty layer as does Edit menu copy paste.
  • Polygonal Lasso used for selection, another empty layer.
  • Duplicate layer and copy work within File 1.
  • Convert layer to Smart Object. Get empty Smart Object layer in File 2
  • Reset Windows clipboard.
  • Rasterize layer then attempt to duplicate. WTAF? Still an empty layer.
  • Save both files as regular .PSDs to company non-Adobe cloud drive and repeat first four steps. Same result.
  • Save both files locally with different file names ensuring and repeat ALL the previous steps. Curse Microsoft and Adobe when I continue to get empty layers.
  • Restart PS and computer.
  • Still get empty layers. Search these forums, stack exchange, reddit and YouTube.
  • Mode is already RGB, switched to CMYK, then back to RGB to make sure. Confirm both files are in RGB 8bit. Still nope.
  • Restart Photoshop. Same result.
  • Flatten image in local File 1 to copy to local File 2. Empty layer
  • Disabled GPU Composting and restarted photoshop. Uh-uh.
  • Disabled GPU completely and restarted PS. Nada.
  • Reset Preferences on Quit. Quit PS, Restart Computer. STILL getting empty layers.
  • Disable GPU again, PS restart, no luck. Full shut down and restart, consider getting cigarettes, (I quit 20 years ago). Have tea instead. Try again for giggles. No giggles found in yet another empty layer.
  • Resave files with new names to Adobe Cloud, fire up MacBook running Big Sur 11.7.6. OMG WHY???? Trusty Mac returns empty layers.
  • Return to Windows machine, try another duplicate layer with another file fully created in Fresco for iPad. Layer duplicates as normal.

Any help to sort this out will be greatly appreciated.
