An annoying event takes place everytime I open edit and save or even just open and close a smart object in standard screen mode. The parent document window resizes (shrinks) to the size/ratio of the smart object window. Each time I edit a smart object I have to resize my document window.
Is there a setting to make the smart objects open in such a way that they are independant of the parent document?
What operating system are you using?
In photoshop do you have Open Documents as Tabs unchecked and/or on a mac have Application Frame unchecked?

Hi there,
Would you mind telling us which version of Photoshop are you working on?
Also, have you tried resetting the preferences of Photoshop and see if that helps?

Note: Make sure that you back up all your custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preset-migration.html

Sahil

I am using CC 2021.
No, I have not reset preferences. I wanted to find out first if it was a "feature", a "bug" or a "local issue".
does anyone else have the same results when opening a smart object from within a document?

Hi Jeff,
Yes, I have "open documents as tabs" checked. You are right, I have only recently switched to using tabs rather than opening in a new window. Not sure what the Application frame preference is you are refering to on the Mac (which I am using). It appears to be the former of the two situations you pointed out.
So the next thing would be, is there a keyboard shortcut to open a document or a smart object as a window even when you are set to open in tabs? If not, I think I'll probably switch back to opening docs seperately.
Thanks Jeff!

In photoshop Window>Application Frame has only the panels and toolbox visible while one can see the desktop thru the document area like below. That was the default interface till photoshop cs4 when one could turn on the Application Frame to match the way photoshop is on windows machines.
application frame off
application frame on
Unfortunately, what your experiencing is a bug in the last several photoshop versions as describe here:

Ahh, Well done Jeff! That explains why this is something that is only now started to irritate me. Because I ran a lot of scripts/actions that were all linked to each other, I had the tendancy to avoid upgrading to higher versions as much as possible to prevent the need to re-link everything (one of my scripts controls over 100 actions depending on the document it receives). I just recently was forced to upgrade my video card and OS as Adobe said they would not support CC2014 any longer. That's why I am noticing the change after upgrading to CC2021. I do hope they take people's requests seriously and fix the "bug" as I find it hard to believe this irritating time waster could be considered a "feature".
Thank you for FULLY investigating and answering my post most excellently! Now it's up to Adobe to come up with a remedy,

You need to open the smart object and edit it. It appears that you are trying to edit the smart object as a regular layer. You could use a mask on the smart object to remove the background but you won't be able to delete it unless you open it in it's own window. Hope that helps.
