Edittext .characters property in CS2

Does the .characters property work in CS2?

dlg.add ("statictext", undefined, "Search: ");

var someEditText = dlg.add ("edittext", undefined, "");

someEditText.characters = 50;

The third line doesn't seem to change the width as would be expected.

Is there a better way around this rather than adding spaces to the empty string of the editText to pad it out a bit?

This should work...

someEditText.preferredSize = [50, 20];
