EXIF Data missing from HEIC files

Aug 14, 2023 Aug 14, 2023

I am needing to convert HEIC Files to .jpg which is easy enough, but I also need to retain EXIF data such as time/date taken and GPS location. I'm not seeing any other posts about this, but when I open these HEIC files in Photoshop (v.24.7 running on Windows 10 enterprise version 22H2, OS Build 19045.3208) then save as JPG, there is none of the original EXIF data at all in the final JPG. I thought maybe it was how I was saving it, but when I open an HEIC file in Photoshop and open "file info" there is no EXIF data there either, so apparently Photoshop is stripping the EXIF data when opening the HEIC. Is anyone else having this issue, or am I doing something wrong?

FYI, Just updated Camera Raw this morning, and Photoshop is showing up to date. Screen shots of HEIC properties, Photoshop "file info" screen and saved JPG properties. Thanks for any help!

Unfortunately, Adobe leverages the underlying OS for this functionality – AFAIK, they don't provide native file support. So I'm guessing that the issue happens before the data lands in Photoshop.

This issue is obviously above my pay grade. I can't install a new codec without submitting an IT ticket and even if I could, I dont know if that would solve the issue. When I right click on the file in the OS and select properties, I can see all the EXIF data, so the OS can apparently read the data. I can also open the HEIC file in the native Photos app without issue and even see the EXIF data within the photos app, which is a step further than Photoshop gets; as once its in PS, there appears to be no EXIF data. Even more, I can save the image as a new HEIC file using the native app while retaining the EXIF, but lose it when converting to any other format.

The data is clearly there its just a matter of whether or not Adobe wants to read it. Hopefully this will be patched in a future update. I dont have the desire to mess with it, so I have officially passed this monkey off to another circus. Thanks for your help though!
