Faux Italic option disabled (greyed out) - as of Photoshop CC 19.1.13

The Faux Bold and Faux Italic options in the Character panel are now disabled using a font which it's always worked for before.  Additionally when I open an old PSD with that in place, it wants to update the text layer - whereupon the italics disappear.

Why is this? Why can't I find any documentation around this?  How can I fix this?

Hi.
This is an old ticket, but the top rated one for this issue when I encountered the same problem.

But I found a solution i believe.
I started a new Text-object with an Open Font (Heebo Thin) and wanted to put some italic on selected words in the text, and it was greyed out like yours.

I tested different fonts on copies of the text-object and was able to slant the selected words with the other font.

And when I changed back to Heebo again the italics remained.

Funnily the faux italic tools was no longer greyed out even when I returned to the original text fising it with the same method.

But, again this is in the far future from your original 2018 query, and I have version 25.9.1 now.
But the greyed out tool still stumped me at first still, so some things maybe haven't changed?
I hope my workaround will help others who find this thread.

Cheers!
Jim

@AEC JPM

The OP asked about an OpenType Variable font. Is Heebo Thin also an OpenType Variable font?

If so, see this message from Adobe Employee Douglas Waterfall about Variable Fonts and Fake (Faux) Italic. I agree with him that fake bold and fake italic should be removed altogether. Until they are, they should be avoided.

"Faux does not work with Open Type Variable fonts. When I talk to the team about this, they suggest that the whole faux functionality should be ripped out and buried in a hole. So they are not going to extend this feature in any way."

Heebo is Open Type, yes.
Well, that is your opinion. But it does not hurt anyone if you can slant them. But not being able to do it makes life difficult to others.
I need to use it when I edit some documents with longer textmasses, and so I believe many others do.
When it is possible, why limit it? Can you predict what every other user needs to do with PS?

Make the applications flexible. Or Adobe will end up on the scrap pile of design history.

I didn't figure this was a bug report, but a general question as to why this would be the case.

This screen recording shows the font, behaviour, and Character panel settings.

Bahnschrift is a Variable Font. Try opening the Properties panel and changing the Slant.

Hi Kieren,

A screenshot of the Character panel would be helpful to figure out what is going on.

Maybe you should start providing relevant information, like the affected font/s, or providing an affected file for testing.

So far I cannot reproduce the issue in Photoshop 19.1.4.
