Question

Fill not working

Recently, my "Fill" stopped working. I use the lasso tool to select something I'd like to eithere fill in or replace and then right-click inside the selection. I then select "fill" and after clicking to initiate the fix, nothing happens. The dialogue box disappears as if to suggest it has worked. The selection lines are still there. But nothing has been changed.

I tried resetting the tool to default. No change. I don't think it's about using the wrong layer because I use mostly use Lightroom Classic and go to Photoshop for repair work ... and more importantly, I only work on the initial background copy layer.

Any thoughts why this is happening? Have I unwittingly checked a box or changed a setting that influences this?

Im using a Macbook Pro, OS 13.6.6 (Ventura).

Yes. The fill command stopped working for me about 18 months ago. This little submenu is the only way I can generate fills in Photoshop anymore. And it has way fewer options. It's been driving me mad for a year.

Can you show your Layers panel? One reason Fill won't work is that you are on a SO, Type, or Adjustment layer.

Also, how are you doing "Fill"? The Fill command is in the Edit menu and is not a tool. The Paint Bucket is a tool.

You can also try the keyboard shortcuts to fill a selection:

  • Fill with Foreground color:Option Delete
  • Fill with Background color: Command Delete

The tool I'm referring to is Lasso ... I thought that was the problem, but the lasso tool works for other editing functions as well.

Your Eyedropper tool is active, not a Selection tool. When you don't have an active selection, your entire layer will get the Fill. One of your screenshots shows you only have a Background layer.

  • Do you mean to fill with Content Aware of did you want to fill with a color?
  • Do you mean to fill with 20% opacity?

Please tell us what you are trying to accomplish so we can better assist.
