Fitting a rectangular image into a square canvas

Hi, I have a rectangular image with three people that I need to fit within 600x600 pixels without distorting the image or cutting anyone out of it. My goal is to find another way to center it within a square canvas without losing the original proportions. Btw, I'm using Windows 10.

When fitting a rectangular image into a square frame you have only three choices:

1. Crop the rectangle to the square.

2. Distort the rectangle to the square.

3. Fit the rectangle inside the square and then fill the blank areas using solid colour, another image, or content aware/generative fill.

Which is the best solution depends on the image.

The only way to make a rectangle into a square without distorting the people in the image is to crop it. There is no other way. Select the crop tool. In the crop menu bar, choose "square". Crop.

There are multiple solutions for this problem. It depends on the content of the actual image; perhaps you can simply crop it, or maybe it's easy to fill the additional space, or it could be difficult if people are very close to the image edges. Can you provide a sample image for the best recommendation?

Edit > Content Aware Scale  — using the Protect feature.  That means roughly selecting the three people and saving the selection. When you use CAS click on Protect, and load the selection you made of thge people.  Works a treat.

Best example image I could find.  I have selected the people, and will save the selection

Ctrl A to select All, and edit CAS. Click on the People Icon, and for good measure, clcik on Protect, and chose the selection you saved.

Drag each side of the image towards the center till you get to the desired width.  Click OK. Job done.
