Generative fill creates completely new image rather than modifying. What's going on?

So I'm selecting the image I want to change, writing a prompt and clicking generate. Photoshop creates an entirely new image rather than modifying the existing one. It just completely ignores what's already there. I've never managed to get it to work. Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm pulling my hair out! Thanks in advance.

Photoshop creates multiple choices to choose from on separate layer. That is normal behavior and non-destructive editing. You can merge layers or flatten the image at any time.

Can you post some screenshots to illustrate the issue?

Thanks for your response. So you can see the original image on the left (blue t-shirt). I selected the area and promted photoshop to add a flower print to the t-shirt. The results were all similar to the example on the right. Generative fill completely ignored the image I wanted to adjust and generated a completely new image. What am I doing wrong?

Appreciate your help!

Could you please post meaningful screenshots including the pertinent Panels?

»The results were all similar to …« seems like a pointless description, please show the results and the prompt.

It seems to work about as intended here.

Well this is so strange... Thanks for your reply but it's suddenly started working and I've literally no idea why. I'm not doing anything different. Could it be creating an Adobe Community account has resolved it? I can't think of any other reason.

It's the size of your selection — it was too big. Compare the marching ants in both images.
