I have a gold glitter patter that I am trying to turn into a gradient or fade.

I am attempting to have the glitter patter fade into less and less glitter...

It's an all over gold glitter image .. how do I fade part of it or turn it into a gradient where the glitter fades away?

You can mask the layer with a white/black gradient.

Additional to Grant H’s advice you might use Blend if-settings.

That looks a bit like a gradient with Blend Mode Dissolve.

A potential problem with Dissolve is the frequency (and nature) of the noise.

If necessary one can try working around that by converting the Layer to a Smart Object, setting the Blend Mode of the SO to Normal, opening the SO, using Image > Image Size to reduce the resolution and save/close-ing the SO.

Thanks. I'll try to fix that because I know the dots (noise) are annoying .. wish they could be sparkly dots... like the glitter fade I intended.

For a more refined approach you could try creating a Brush with some randomised features (Scattering for example) and some Pressure Sensitivity (for Foreground/Background Jitter possibly).

In a "Fade to anything" approach, Here's a method that works.  Use Layer Style to fade the shadows.  Linear Light for the layer mode.   Add some noise to the mask and apply the gradient to the mask in Multiply mode.
