Gradient Tool

I was wanting to script the gradient tool.  I didn't find anything in the ref so I took a look at what the listener would give me.  It returned a very long action.  Is that the only way to do it or is there an easier way?

Yes, scriptlistner is the only to control a gradient with scripting. You could call an action if you wanted to apply a fixed gradient.
