The simplest way to do this is to use Bridge to drag and drop. If you don't use Bridge, drag and drop from your desktop - works on Mac and PC. You can also go to Fille, Place in Photoshop.

To open a bunch of images into Layers in the same image, start in Bridge, go to Tools, Photoshop, Load into Photoshop Layers. You can do the same thing from inside of PS - go to File, Scripts, Load Files into Stack...
