How do I create this gradient?

I'm trying to recreate the above effect where the center is white for the subject, then you get that smooth gradient above and below. It looks like a gradient on a layer mask (and dropping transparency a bit?), but keep getting extremes of white and my dark color.

Any tips, videos, etc.? Thanks.

Can you post screenshot of your Layers panel?

You can create Reflected Gradient and later work with Gradient layer mask if necessary.

This is what I'm currently working with. Thanks. How do you get to the Gradient Fill pop-up?

Double click the gradient.  It helps if you have the colours you want to use somewhere on your screen so you can sample them.  In fact, when you double click to open the Gradient editor, it automatically changes to the eye dropper tool.
