How do I get the checkered background?

Community Beginner ,

Hello, how do I get the checkered background in photoshop? I've tried creating a new layer and deleting the background but I'm still not getting a checkered canvas. Do I need to change my settings?

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?

What are the Photoshop > Perferences > Transparency & Gamut-settings?
