How to add gradient to layer mask 2020

Community Beginner ,
Nov 21, 2019 Nov 21, 2019

Before 2020 I used to be able to put a gradient in a layer mask by clicking and drawing a line but that dosen't seem to work in 2020.

I have a figure on a layer and I want it to go from solid (100% opacity) to zero so you can see her face  but then the body slowly fades away to be invisible by the time you get to her feet

how could I do this in 2020?

If what Myra doesn't work, try resetting your preferences. There has been no change to how this works.

The Paint Bucket also uses G. If you've used the Paint Bucket recently, pressing G will select that tool. To cycle through all the tools that use G, press Shift while you press G until you get to the Gradient Tool.

Select the layer that contains the figure. Go to the bottom of the Layers panel, click the Add Layer Mask icon (3rd from the left) to make the layer mask. The layer mask will be selected, so select the Gradient Tool (G) with the black to white gradient and drag up from the bottom to the top to apply the gradient to the mask.

Hmm - that's what I used to do but it seems this no longer works in the new 2020 version...

Can you describe what's happening? And what is your system setup (platform, device, etc.)? I'm on Windows 10 and just went through the steps to make sure there wasn't any sort of error, and it still works for me.

I'm windows 10. I've got the layer mask fine but pushing G just brings up the paint bucket

I'm sure I used to select the gradient tool from the an icon top left but it's not there now

I have opened the gradient window but I can't work out how to get the selected gradient onto the mask....
