Hi There,
After searching, the generally accepted solution is to toggle off the 'Show Stylistic Alternatives' button on the character panel but this doesn't work for me.
Have also tried disabling Adobe Montserrat and enabling Google's but still the same issue - the non-italic fonts appear as strange characters. This only happens with Montserrat in Photoshop for some reason.
Does anyone know why and how to fix?
Any help much appreciated.

Sounds like you need to clear font caches.
I use Typeface for font organisation and can clear font caches with it
https://typefaceapp.com/help/troubleshooting/macos-font-cache
You could also use Onyx (which also does much more) https://titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html
