How to get purple "smoothing" line to display in PS 2019?

I've only recently updated to PS 2019 from 2018 (before it would completely crash so I held off on updating for as long as possible) and I notice that the smoothing tool for brushes no longer displays the purple line the former version has? Is there any way to re-enable this? I did change the drawing mode down from Advanced to Normal to ease my PC's performance as it was a little slow without, would this be the cause of the line disappearing?
