Question

How to get softer/feathered edges in Photoshop

Hey,

Big photoshop noob here. I'm working on a design and somehow managed to get 1 nice soft edge and 1 harsh one. Does anyone know how I can get the harsh ones softer? I've attached an image as an example (it's zoomed in a lot to show pixels)

Thanks in advance!

Bart

Hi Bart,

I put your screenshot here so others don’t have to follow the link.

Are you trying to fix existing shapes or create new shapes that are better?

The reddish one looks like anti-alias was turned off.

Is this on layers or is it flat?

Does it have to be the exact same size?

To fix this, assuming it is flat, you would need to do each side separately with the proper settings as others have described. Save first, and choose undo if it’s not what you are seeking with this image.

For Selections you can first check »Anti-alias« in the Options Bare (depending on the Selection Tool) and after the fact you can use

Select > Modify > Feather

For Layer Masks and Vector Masks you can use the Feather setting in the Properties Panel.

Thanks for your response. When I make a selection and go to Modify -> Feather it doesn't seem to change a thing...

If you mean the »Marching Ants« that may be utterly irrelevant.

Please post screenshots including the pertinent Panels to clarify what you mean.
